Tomorrow evening, Tuesday, June 29 from 6:30 to 7:30 the Center for Brooklyn History will present a virtual event, Representing Brooklyn: The Life and work of Major Owens, that tells of the life and accomplishments of a Black man from Brooklyn who started his career as a librarian and later became a State Senator and, after that, a Representative in Congress, and whose “legacy is defined by his work as a tireless antipoverty reformer and as an advocate for education, civil rights, Americans with disabilities, workers’ rights, and immigrants.” The program will be presented by members of the late Rep. Owens’s family. The event is free; RSVP here to get link instructions.
This Wednesday, July 30 at 6:30 PM, the CBH will present another virtual program, Looking Back, Looking Forward: Black Lives Matter, the Pandemic, and the Future, a panel discussion featuring historian Johanna Fernandez, entrepreneur and activist Zenat Begum, and State Senator Jabari Brisport, moderated by Intercept reporter Akela Lacy. There’s more information and link instructions here.
