I’m sad to report that the payphone at Pineapple and Cadman was removed in the past week or two. I think this may have been the last phone booth in the Heights, after the one on the promenade was removed about a year ago.

FYI, many new appointments for the Covid vaccine at George Westinghouse are immediately available as of today, 1:00 p.m.

There is a rotary payphone next to the bathrooms in the memorial in Cadman Plaza. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/4c4bada774b43ca3cfc49d55c3683b5ae4482d961817bcc5f1be8512a5e36676.jpg

Whens the last time you actually used a payphone?

I had my first vaccination there last Sunday. A completely professional, expedient experience. One of hose singular examples of things working as they should. Thanks to Notify New York, an email service that alerts subscribers to all things City–including, in my case, local vaccine availability–for kicking the whole process off.

I last used the Pineapple phone about six months ago. Tried to use it about a month ago, but it ate my quarter.

Now that’s a find! Amazing. Still has a 212 area code printed in the center – that puts it at 1984 at the latest (before the 718 split). Obviously the rotary makes it even older. I also appreciate that it has New York Telephone, NYNEX, Bell Atlantic and Verizon branding all at the same time. This is a real Franken-phone!

Wow, been around 20 years for me.

  • Cranberry Beret

I had my occasional reasons, which usually involved exercising outside the house and forgetting to bring my mobile.

Actually my biggest complaint with payphones these days is not that their owners are removing them, but that they’ve left the non-functioning ones up. They get a concession from the city to take up the sidewalk and blast out advertising in exchange for providing calling service, but they’re not doing that.

If no one’s using them or they’re broken, yank them out and reclaim the public space. (And please god, no more LinkNYC units.)

But, I hope the Cadman War Memorial phone ends up in a museum of mid 20th century artifacts :)

    Wouldn’t that be Hicks Street?

  • Jorale-man

Nope, Remsen. You can see the Queen Anne-style townhouse, fourth house over, back when the stoop was still attached. And the Our Lady of Lebanon Maronite Cathedral is at the right. The street hasn’t changed much, thankfully.

  • Andrew Porter

I think indeed it is Remsen and Hicks.

  • Andrew Porter

    Just the vehicles…

  • RickP

Right. But, Hicks, not Henry, isn’t it?

  • Jorale-man

Here’s the corner of Henry & Remsen today, via Google Street View. You can see the same church entrance on the right. Hicks wold be the next block over, unless I’m imagining things? https://www.google.com/maps/@40.6940707,-73.9944044,3a,75y,327.76h,95.33t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sSbnC1tHDKxtUQV15kzhNGA!2e0!7i16384!8i8192

Definitely Remsen and Henry. The Bossert is on the corner of Remsen and Hicks.

  • RickP

Thanks. I see it now. I was mis-oriented by 90 degrees.

  • Banet

    Henry.
