Strike that, reverse it — we just heard from Alap Vora, Concord Market’s general manager, with an update about the store’s construction schedule.

“The schedule changed this morning,” Vora said. The new schedule put an opening at the store, which is at the intersection of Tillary and Jay streets, in mid-June to early July — but that could change, pending city permit approval and various construction delays.

“We’re pushing everyone to finish sooner, but we’d rather not rush our contractors. We plan to be here for a long time so it’s important that the construction is done properly,” he explained.

“We’re excited to open as soon as possible,” Vora said, who lives in the area. “I know how frustrating it is to have to run across town just to get groceries.”

Vora wasn’t anticipating the amount of work that needed to be done before opening, he said — and “putting in state-of-the-art modern equipment that’s custom-made takes a little bit longer.”

But, once it opens, Vora said the “modern food market” — with its juice bar, salads, wraps, coffee bar, organic and natural foods, and catering and delivery options — will be worth the wait.

“The first few months will tell us what people are asking for, and that will dictate what we carry. It’s our job to make sure we have a good mix of products to serve our customers,” he said.
