Not sure how that participatory budgeting thing works – has it gone past “trial” status with smallish sums of money?

PROPOSED: That someone deal with the 50-year-problem-and-getting worse all the time intersection where the BQE crosses Cadman/Old Fulton. The commuter railroads are dealing with cars (criminally!) endangering lives – no doubt at an enormous expense. Both pedestrians and cars would benefit if a bridge like the one going over the BQE at Union Street were constructed.

And while the BQE fix could be used as an excuse to stand pat, this is like an aneurism – “watch & wait” totally feels WRONG.

Courtesy the Municipal Archives, here’s the corner of Hicks and Montague in 1940, before the Montague Street side had stores and a stairway:

The docks of Furman Street: “The Men Who Work the Brooklyn Docks” is the title of this 1912 painting by George Bellows, which now hangs in the National Gallery in London:

anybody else semi-regularly smell a strong moth-ball smell in the neighborhood? seems to be when it’s cold. i smelled it on Remsen last night, Joralemon and Clinton this morning, and Henry and Pierrepont a few weeks ago. Am i going nuts?

  • DIBS

Old people out in their sweaters?

Could be from a Dry cleaners, the smell is similar to mothballs.

Really interesting. Have you ever noticed that the steps to the stores (deli and nail salon) are really steep? Also where did the bench at the top of the stairs go?

  • Andrew Porter

I never go up there or patronize those stores. Still waiting for Fred Eisen’s leatherworks store to come back…

Brownstoner reported on the Landmarks decisions on 200 Montague Street, and the Atlantic Avenue fruit & veg store, here:

Cautiously optimistic about the Fruit & Veg plans. The new building is nicely contextual. Just hope they stick to their word and the store isn’t out of commission for too awfully long.

Heights Deli is run by the nicest bodega guys south of Clark Street, IMHO.

I feel like I saw a companion piece to this by Bellows at the Snug Harbor museum on Staten Island.

  • Anonymouse

Yes! I was wondering what that was. I felt like I couldn’t breathe. I only noticed it yesterday and actually went on here to find out if anyone has any info. Is it toxic? What IS that?

  • MaggieO

it was pretty intense on Remsen last night. the smell of mothballs is napthalene. apparently some people try to repel rats and mice with mothballs… maybe that’s it?

  • Jean

I smelled something awful this morning too! I could not figure out

Here’s a photo from 5 years back – hard to believe how light traffic was at that moment. Given NY aggressive drivers and a curvy 90-degree turn, it has to be the scariest intersection in Brooklyn Hts.
(In case you simply don’t know that part of 11201, L_M_M!)

Thank you for sharing the link to that information! I am so glad that the demolition doesn’t mean the grocery will be gone for good. I love that store and shop there every week. It’s always busy.

All of the BQE reconstruction plans out there propose to fix this issue by building a direct connection from Brooklyn-bound bridge traffic to the southbound BQE without having to get off at Cadman/Old Fulton first. Presumably the existing on-ramp would be closed. Technically it’s still Hicks Street (western spur) until Vine Street, and then the on-ramp starts.

    Again on Remsen last night.
