I’m moving back to Brooklyn Heights after several years away, and this time around I have a dog. Any recommendations for veterinarians and/or groomers would be gratefully received.

  • Diesel

I give a 4 paw rating (the highest I can give) to Dr. Heather Thomson and the team at Brooklyn Heights Veterinary Hospital.
While I haven’t been to a groomer in quite a spell, the bark on the street is Rocco and Jezebel for Pets does good work.

Agreed on both Rocco and Jezebel and Dr. Thomson! We’re very happy with both!

Welcome back! Dr. Neumann at Vinegar Hill Vets is fantastic. Office hours in both Brooklyn Heights and DUMBO locations.

  • AEB

Diesel, you know whereof you bark, in my not-so-humble opinion. Heather Thomson, her crew and hospital are the best!

If only human medical care were conducted with the same attention to the all-around well being of patients as Thomson provides, this would be a better world.

What is that horrible smell outside of Gristedes on Henry every morning? Can’t be good for business.

  • Sweeties

Did the sushi bar open already? :)

A question about Montague Street for the sage history buffs – why is the main level below grade? Doesn’t seem great for commercialization, but there must be a good reason for it.

  • Cranberry Beret

Almost all the walk-up buildings on Montague were originally brownstone houses just like all the rest in the neighborhood. So they have stoops and garden levels.

If you’re thinking about the western end of Montague, as you approach the Promenade, it used to slope down steeply to the level of the docks. It included a streetcar line that carried passengers to and from a ferry terminal near the present derelict Pier 4. Montague was cut through higher ground on both sides, and a little pedestrian bridge, the “Penny Bridge,” crossed it about where the Promenade is now.

Ditto on Dr Thomson. Vinegar Hill vets also great.

There’s visual evidence to back this up, in this old postcard which shows stoops and businesses on the parlor level of brownstones along Montague (click to enlarge):

The duplex storefronts? It doubles the commercial space in each building. Though historically certain businesses, like restaurants, don’t do well on the upper levels.

Does anyone know what was filming in Borough Hall yesterday? They had a mini farmer’s market set up

  • meschwar

    A new show called “FBI”.

  • cool

Thanks for the responses. I see now the differences between the townhouse storefronts. I didn’t realize that montague was developed as primarily residential, and then converted to more commercial. In my head, i was comparing it to something like uws broadway, where you don’t see the below grade storefronts.

Hi, I am moving to your neighborhood, I have accepted a teaching position in a high school and now I need to find a space to call home, does anyone know where I can find a studio, one bedroom. I am professional, quiet, clean and responsible. My max would be $1000, as I am a public school teacher. Please let me know if you know anyone in your neighborhood that could help me. I have looked on all the apps, sites, etc, but hoping a word of mouth. Thank you!

  • Andrew Porter

I feel your pain, but this is a very expensive neighborhood.

As I often tell people gawking at the prices in the windows of local real estate offices, “If I didn’t already live here, I couldn’t afford to live here.”

  • Kimberly L Nodoro

Do you have any idea of a friend, co-worker, neighbor that might have a studio that they aren’t going to list because of all of the nonsense that goes with that? I don’t have to be in that specific area but close enough that I am not spending hours commuting. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

  • KXrVrii1

So you are looking for someone wealthy enough that they don’t list a studio “because of all the nonsense that goes with that”, but will rent to you for below market and still be stuck with all the “nonsense” that goes with being a landlord?

    I can’t really fault you for trying…

  • Kimberly L Nodoro

Oh they don’t have to be wealthy, just smart. I didn’t mean any disrespect.

Hi Kimberly, I’m working on getting teaching certification at the moment and it’s very disheartening to hear that a position in a high school still only affords such a low flexibility on rent. I’m not aware of even roommate situations where you can get away with $1k a month, and that’s in less desirable neighborhoods.

  • Banet

Brooklyn Heights is one of the most expensive neighborhoods in all of NYC.

As the G Train goes from a number of less than expensive neighborhoods to walking distance of Brooklyn Heights, is look along the G train.

Oh, and under $1,000 is possible. I know several 20-something’s who live in 2 bedrooms in Astoria for a hair under $2,000 total… so &850 to $950 a person.

  • KXrVrii1

No disrepect taken, and I apologize if I came off as a jerk. Ultimately I agree with StudioBrookyln below, it is disheartening that your salary as a teacher doesn’t support more flexibility on rent. Best of luck, and keep your spirit up!

There were two nytimes articles this past year which you might want to check out. Both listed sites and apps off the beaten pack. Especially check out the first one. Good Luck!
