Subway Service Alerts: Brooklyn Heights and Vicinity

This will be a “green light” weekend, as there are no planned service changes that directly affect service at any local stations. Indeed, there will be extra service from Manhattan and into Brooklyn at Court Street, as Brooklyn bound N trains will be running on the R line from 6:00 AM Saturday, August 11 to 10:00 PM, Sunday, August 12, and Brooklyn bound Q trains will be running on the R line from Canal Street to DeKalb Avenue from 3:45 AM Saturday to 10:00 PM Sunday.

The following work week – Monday, August 13 to Friday, August 17 – each night from 10:00 PM to 5:00 AM there will be no 3 trains running, but 2 trains should be running normally. 4 trains will provide alternative service to 3 train stops from Atlantic Avenue to New Lots Avenue.

    Clark Street station was closed altogether this morning, as they were worried the third and last elevator would go out. There was no ETA.

    In the old days, when the elevators went out, we climbed up and down the staircase. Quite a challenge, I guess it’s no longer an option.

    I remember reading some years ago that the elevators at Clark Street were designed to be used on aircraft carriers, to carry flight crews from the briefing room to the flight deck. Fortunately, they never had to be used in a national emergency.

    In all my years living here, I’ve never used those stairs. Before they locked the doors, I heard that homeless people allegedly lived in them.

    I heard the inner guts used mechanical parts derived from aircraft carrier airplane lifts.

    Yesterday afternoon I saw big rotary motors sitting on Henry Street surrounded by MTA workers, before they were installed.

    Ironically, I always thought of Clark Street as the slightly – slightly – better station than Borough Hall. If I was inviting friends to the neighborhood, I’d suggest they get off there as it’s a little better cared for and less chaotic. Not now….

    I’ve heard the same story but it was only about the cabs as they were changed from the the original ones. However, a good portion of the mechanicals are probably still original.

    “I heard the inner guts used mechanical parts derived from aircraft carrier airplane lifts” Doubtful, as the elevators were built it 1919, the first aircraft carrier (USN) wasn’t built till 1922. There are also a lot of technical reasons I won’t get into.

    Despite the elevators it still may be the slightly better station. Remember that in June there was a platform ceiling collapse at Borough Hall station.
