I recently broke my glasses and will need new frames and lenses.
I may need an eye exam also. Can anyone suggest a place in the Heights that won’t be overly expensive? Thank you!

Actress Mary Louise Parker, who has lived here for several years, bought a new place, Curbed and Brownstoner reported:

    My wife recommends Cohen’s.

    Thank you Claude!

I’ve never gotten an exam there, but See on Smith st has an excellent and reasonably cheap selection of frames.

Claude’s photo is of the top of Our Lady of Lebanon. The church had a steeple until it blew down during the Hurricane of 1955. There’s a photo of the church before it lost the steeple, and description of the famous bronze Normandie doors, on their website here:

There’s a long article with photos on Brownstoner about the reconstruction of 59 Middagh Street.

I commented that it’s one of several buildings on Middagh that have retained merely the shape of the original building, as everything else has been replaced.

Is the hurricane story really true? One book says it was a hurricane — but in 1938 — and another says it was high maintenance costs that led the church to dismantle it. The latter seems more probable even if less sensational.
