On the night of November 9-10, 1938 Nazi-inspired gangs rampaged through German, Austrian, and German occupied Czech cities and towns, trashing Jewish owned businesses, synagogues, and houses, and murdering many Jews. This became known as Kristallnacht (“the night of broken glass”) and could be considered the first manifestation of the Holocaust. The 79th anniversary of Kristallnacht will be marked by an event at City Tech’s Atrium Amphitheater, 300 Jay Street, starting at noon on Wednesday, November 8. Honorees will be: (1) Dr. Inge Auerbacher, Holocaust survivor and author of several books; (2) Bill Tingling, president of School News Nationwide, which seeks to bring African-American and Jewish students together “by teaching the commonality of their historical experience”; and David Gill, Consul General in New York for Germany.
The event is free, and open to all.
