We are considering replacing the glass in a couple of our windows. They are very large glass panes (40×60) in an older brownstone. Any thoughts on the work or recommendations for who we should get to do the work? Thanks

Did everyone enjoy the DOT’s 1am-2am jackhammering on the corner of Clinton and Joralemon this morning? All that noise and it looks like they opened up a 2’x2′ hole close enough to the sidewalk that they wouldn’t have even had to close the intersection if they’d done it during the day. Miracle of miracle, my 4-month-old slept through it all without a peep.

Anyone know what police activity last evening on Pierrepont – between Henry/Hicks was about? Approx. 6:45PM.

  • fultonferryres

What is going on with Fascati’s extended closure?

  • St. Georgette

I was going to ask the same thing! They haven’t even updated the sign saying they are reopening 9/8. We need pizza.

  • Poplar

I’m getting nervous because yesterday I saw the 9/8 sign was taken down, but nothing replaced it!

Some good tips here on taking care of street trees. Worth reading in light of the ongoing drought (trees need 8-10 gallons of water a week, it says — something we haven’t seen through rain in months). http://www.nybg.org/gardens/home-gardening/tips/street-trees.php

    Damn, any news today?

  • Jorale-man

An interesting look at proposed renovations to the house next to the CVS on Henry Street.

Apparently, it’s currently an SRO, which seems unusual for the Heights. The owner wants to take over the bottom 3 floors.

They don’t ask for my name anymore. I’ve ordered the Chicken Parm and salad with vinegar dressing on the side for years. It’s in the weekly rotation, along with Iron Chef House. Part of Paul Giamatti’s too. I hope they return and everything is healthy with the Fascatis. They are Brooklyn Heights family and I’m just happy to have had a seat at their table on Tuesday’s (figurative; I do take out).

  • Karl Junkersfeld

Does SRO have private bathroom and kitchenette?

  • Jorale-man

My understanding is SROs are rooming houses, usually for formerly homeless people so I’m not sure about the bathroom and kitchen. But yes, the Heights and vicinity is really changing.

  • Concerned

I’m in serious panic mode about this. All the pizza places in one square mile of fascati’s and only Table 87 is close to as good.

  • PistachioPony

Anyone know what these things are they have installed in the Heights and in DUMBO?

  • Heightsman

    Does Table 87 deliver?

  • Concerned

    Yes. They even deliver slices.

I’m guessing the equipment is part of what’s called a distributed antenna system being put together by NYC. Here’s an article about one that was created in Central Park:

I’m pretty sure they’re related to the traffic-counting strips that were installed up the whole length of Hicks Street last week. My question is, who’s doing the traffic study and why? I’m concerned someone is looking into the feasibility of rerouting highway traffic onto Hicks when the BQE cantilever gets repaired.

  • Cranberry Beret

Another question burning through the ages…why is the “Middagh Street” sign on the BQE (see it small way up high in your pic) located well north of Poplar Street, practically at Old Fulton??

  • StudioBrooklyn

It’s cropped out of the photo above but at the very top of the apparatus is something that appears to be a bowtie. I mean a camera. (It’s really a camera.)

  • Jorale-man

A memorial to the old Middagh Street, before Robert Moses bulldozed it?

  • Heightsman

BQE marker for when someone calls in an emergency (on the BQE) to better locate their position more quickly for FDNY, etc.

  • Cranberry Beret

Yes I get that, but why not use the closest cross street? The sign is several blocks from Middagh; Poplar is closer.

  • bklyn84

Cranberry Beret and Studio Brooklyn are on the right track, it’s definitely related to NYC traffic management and the equipment is a camera. On the web there’s a company, Moivision, that markets a “Scout Video Collection Unit” as a “Purpose-built traffic counting device for professional data collectors.”

This morning I looked around and found THREE NEW setups on State Street, two at Boerum Place and one at Smith Street. Here’s a photo of the camera beside the Brooklyn Law School dorm. I would note NYC will also need current traffic data for both the BQE cantilever project and for this fall’s BQX streetcar discussions.

  • PistachioPony

Yup this is it. So they are counting traffic. @disqus_EW5uFl09we:disqus I would also like to know who and why. Something like this should be known by our community board.

  • PistachioPony

Cranberry Beret, I found a project on the DOT website that may explain why they are watching traffic. http://www.nyc.gov/html/dot/html/about/current-projects.shtml

I asked various business owners, including at Fortune House, and they have heard nothing.

  • Heightsman

Funny, I have been doing the same. Nothing. I can only pray that they needed to do some upgrading or something internally.
