Suspected Murder On Joralemon Street

Terrible news.

Joralemon has gone from my second favorite street in the Heights to walk, after Garden Place, to the worst due to congestion. And now this….

I feel terrible for the Marks family.

no, because that would be nimbyism and not facing the reality that we are part of the city and all that comes with it. michelle marks was a resident of the albany houses in crown heights. they say it was murder because she was not robbed or assaulted. she was targeted by the assailant who she likely knew, according to reports. i feel for her and her family and i also have grave concerns for this community.

Yes, it’s clear that BBP needs to show that it’s committed to turning the park around. There’s a need for more security in and around the park, whether it’s NYPD or, less favorably, private security. I see a patrol car stationed on Pier 2 now most afternoons, which is progress, but not enough.

As I said in a previous post, the park is going to ruin Brooklyn heights.

The victim’s mother told NBC that the victim’s ex-boyfriend assaulted her last weekend and that she was going to file a restraining order against him. She worked at Fornino, on Pier 6 in the park, and had just gotten off of work at 9, and texted a friend that the ex-boyfriend had showed up with a gun.

If that is the truth, this was a case of domestic violence and assault that, as it too often does, led to a young woman’s death. It could have happened anywhere, had she worked in another location, this young woman just had the misfortune of walking through a dark, empty area to get home from work.

The location is an unfortunate coincidence. But by all means, yes, absolutely. Let’s jump to conclusions about the basketball courts and how this horrible incident is more proof that they’re ruining Brooklyn Heights by bringing in people from other neighborhoods, before we have any of the full details.

Lying in wait, premeditation..hopefully this person never sees light of day.

I don’t concur with your conclusion that Redlola was “making light” of this incident. She astutely pointed out that its connection to the location where it occurred was more incidental than not.

Regardless, I find it a little baffling that so many commenters here feel at such liberty to resort to ad hominem attacks, especially when they so often have otherwise intelligent and valuable contributions (such as you do).

Adding to what Cate said below, an official statement from the 84th precinct:

“Last night at approximately 9:30 PM, a 23 year old female was shot and killed inside of Brooklyn Bridge Park near the Atlantic Avenue entrance adjacent to Pier 6. We believe this shooting was the result of an ongoing domestic dispute. The victim worked at a location inside of the park and she was confronted as she left work. We have no reason to believe that this incident was related to any of the issues we have had in the park this year such as overcrowding and/or unruly crowds. We will continue to increase our patrol coverage within the park using all available resources including the 25 Police Officers permanently assigned to the Park.”

So this shooting could’ve occurred in Fornino’s. Or where it occurred. Or along Atlantic Avenue. Or at Borough Hall. Or outside the front door of her apartment building. Her death had nothing to do with the park, the patrons of the park, the basketball courts, or a lack of security.

You proclaim nimby-ism when Brooklyn Heights doesn’t want to be part of New York’s median crime rate. You are deranged.

i think the underlying issue is this. we all talk about the systemic issues that make other neighborhoods crime-ridden. why would is it not ok to express concern when the outputs of those systemic issues that ppl argree should be fixed elsewhere suddenly end up in our community. This particular situation seems like a one-off as it was likely specific to this woman’s relationship. Unfortunately, her ex (if he did indeed do this as reports suggest) had no regard for human life and an clear objective so it could and would have happened anywhere. That said, the other crimes that the neighborhood has experienced on joralemon and elsewhere adjacent to the park as specifically related to park traffic. i think the park is a great amenity for all who enjoy it but there do need to be some better systems in place for managing the impact of the hordes of people coming through what is essentially a bedroom community. Those of us who live here should never feel shamed for expressing concern over developments that are concerning.

Lol. Well, in that case, I fully retract my statement. I’d like to point it at the anti-Nimby crowd instead. My mistake.

Details are still unfolding, but all signs seem to be pointing to this as a tragic case of domestic violence…having nothing to do with the park. This blog has plenty of outlets for folks to express their views with respect to the park and the basketball courts. Feels inappropriate to do it here. Someone was murdered, and in my opinion, squabbling about the park feels very petty.
