Municipal Art Society Presents Two “Jane’s Walk” Events At Brooklyn Bridge Park This Weekend.

Yesterday (May 4) was the hundredth anniversary of the birth of Jane Jacobs (photo), and in her honor this weekend the Municipal Art Society of New York is presenting two “Jane’s Walks” at Brooklyn Bridge Park. These are both free, but require RSVP. On Saturday, May 7, from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m., you can get a sneak peek at the Pier 5 uplands, now under construction. More information and RSVP here. On Sunday, May 8, from 11:00 a.m. to noon, BBP Director of Horticulture Rebecca McMackin and others will guide you on a Flower Field Tour of Pier 6. More information and RSVP here.

    Jane Jacobs would come running off her stoop in protest to this Corporation’s using her name. She stood for neighborhood building and cooperation and respect among nearby residents.
    This Park Corporation has repeatedly stuck its thumb in the eye of its closest neighbor.
    It was Brooklyn Heights which brought the corporation into existence. But the big money guys were quick to take it over. That’s why they ignored our interests and proceeded to overbuild Pierhouse, block views, discourage a search for a practical solution to getting people to the park without disturbing our peaceful streets. It is why they paper over disturbing, violent events on the piers.
    It is why the Courts are unresponsive to the costly and detailed examinations of their self-serving claims.
    This Corporation perpetrates exactly the painful development
    patterns that Jane Jacobs wrote about in describing the consequences of run-away developers squeezing every last buck they can get out of our juicy city’s structure.

    Lots of dirty laundry is starting to come out — the mayor solicited Peebles, the second highest bidder for LICH, for $20k when its bid was pending. It will be interesting to see what some of the winners in the park sweepstakes paid.
