Open Thread Wednesday

keico on flickrAnother week, another open thread, feel free to bring up whatever you like including:

With Love Lane garage closing to make way for condos, is it time to junk your car?

Escalator riders at High Street subway station — walk to the left, stand to the right. If you're going to DO A CROSSWORD PUZZLE while riding down, blocking others, at least GET OUT OF THE WAY.

Speaking of High Street subway station, are the token booth clerks either sleeping or combing their hair when you pass by in the morning?

Heights Casino – no gambling, what's the point?

Rudy Giuliani for President?

Anyone check out Heights Players' Of Mice and Men?

If BHB threw a party, would you come?

With Love Lane garage closing to make way for condos, is it time to junk your car? Fiona the Pink Toyota, a frisky fourteen year old, spends her idle time (of which there is much lately) in the lot adjoining the south side of the Brooklyn Bridge abutment. No junkyard in sight for her.

Escalator riders at High Street subway station — walk to the left, stand to the right. If you’re going to DO A CROSSWORD PUZZLE while riding down, blocking others, at least GET OUT OF THE WAY. I suppose.

Speaking of High Street subway station, are the token booth clerks either sleeping or combing their hair when you pass by in the morning? I never notice. I’m too busy opening my paper to the crossword puzzle as I walk past the booth.

Heights Casino – no gambling, what’s the point? You mean, no one’s told you about the pari mutuel pool on youth squash games?

Rudy Giuliani for President? Fortunately for us, my wife has relatives in Canada.

Anyone check out Heights Players’ Of Mice and Men? When I was a sophomore in high school, so many of my classmates gave book reports on Of Mice and Men (you could read it in one evening) that the mere sound of the name “Lenny” still makes me cringe.

If BHB threw a party, would you come? Yes. Especially if Homer will give bocce lessons.

what’s the story with the Casino? what does it cost to join (assuming you can get in)? annual fees? is there a restraurant in there?

  • CS

I would definitely come to a party by BHB. Always looking to meet new and interesting people.

Please no Giuliani for president. I can’t believe he’s ahead in polls.

A BHB bocce party…just have to make sure it’s not on a league night.

Nevermind the High Street station…What prohibited them from building escalators at the Clark Street station? Those elevators are the bane of my existence.

where is there a good medium stakes dealer’s choice poker game in heights? a little texas hold ’em, a little omaha, a little 7-card and 5-card stud?

    >

I agree. However, what’s the protocol if one of the escalators is broken (as one usually is)?

    >

Holy crap. Those elevators are ridiculous. At least one is always broken and what’s with the one that you usually need to physically push the doors closed in order to get it to go up to the street level??

Sorry – my quotes were deleted. First comment was in response to High Street escalator quote in original post. Second comment was in response to Qfwfq’s Clark Street post.

    1) No chance I even sell my car, let alone junk it. It’s down south for the winter, but — as I wrote here a while ago — I’ll need to find a place to park when I retrieve it around April or May. I’m still seeking recommendations for covered parking garages in the area. I’ve heard horror stories about some of the other local garages.

    2) I’m a member of the Casino, and of course the point is to play year-round tennis and squash! I’m sure the question was tongue-in-cheek, but to clear up any actual confusion, the term originates from the Italian word cascina, meaning “little summer house.” In the nineteenth century, the term casino was applied to clubs where attendees gambled and played sports. Probably the best example of such a building is the Newport Casino in RI, which predates our Heights Casino by about twenty years.

Incidentally, hkjh, the Casino is not terribly expensive to join (depending on one’s age and marriage status), but where they get you is with the court fees, lessons, fitness center fees, food minimum (yes, there is a restaurant and a “grill” there, and it’s pretty good, but it’s never been more than 1/2 filled whenever I’m there), white collared shirts, etc.

    3) I’ve also voiced my displeasure in the past at the Clark St. station’s soul-sapping elevators. Not a great way either to start or finish a commute, but I don’t see a good fix in the near future. I think it’s the price of living in a particularly high area (thus “the heights”) — if you’ve ever taken the stairs you realize that the elevators cover a lot of ground (more than I thought they did). The depth of the station, coupled with the size limitations of the St. George footprint, must have contributed to the decision to install elevators.

I would try to make a BHB party this spring, and I cast an early vote for either Floyd (did I even need to say that?) or Buck’s. Or Food [sic?] Maestro, assuming someone can get us reservations.

What is the deal with Key Food on Montague? I shop there because it is the closest grocery store to my apartment. I know there are other options in the neighborhood, but with the biting cold I choose to go to the nearest one. Is it just me or do these employees treat the customers like we are an inconvenience to them? Also it seems like the longer the lines get the slower the cashiers become. I was wondering if all key food’s were this bad or is a problem that is only at the Montague store?

  • http://brooklynheightsblog.com Qfwfq

The Key Food cashiers just seem merely bored, I haven’t received any attitude from them. I actually quite like the Montague Key Food, but then again for years my only grocery choice was a Gristede’s. Now that was a hateful place.

Re Clark Street, the subway has to go under the river and then up a hill. I believe it’s one of the deepest stations in the system. Having taken the stairs there a time or two, if it had escalators they’d probably have to start around Pierrepont St.

what’s the deal with the guy who stands at the henry st entrance to the clark st 2/3, who is perpetually smoking cigarettes and talking to himself?

RE: Heights Player’s ‘Of Mice and Men’ – Went to see it last weekend; didn’t know what to expect. Wound up being very impressed – nice ensemble casting, unexpected laughs, some amazing individual performances. By the end of the show, I totally believed George & Lennie. I’ll definitely see another show there.
