To get you in a macabre mood for the coming Halloween, Brooklyn Bridge Park’s Wednesday Night Tour this week is “Haunted Brooklyn Heights”, led by Andrea Janes of Boroughs of the Dead.
Nestled within the sedate charms of one of Brooklyn’s oldest neighborhoods is a wealth of gory, ghastly, haunted, and horrific tales.
Perhaps some of these tales inspired one of the past century’s best known horror fiction writers, H.P. Lovecraft, who for some time in the 1920s made his home on Clinton Street near State. There, on a couple of hot August nights, he wrote “The Horror at Red Hook”. The tour starts at the entrance to Pier 1 at 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, October 21. Tickets for the tour are $10, or $5 for Brooklyn Bridge Park Conservancy members. There’s more information here and you may purchase tickets here.
On Thursday evening there will be another NYRR Open Run. It starts at Fornino, near the entrance to Pier 6. Check in (it’s free) starting at 6:45; the run begins at 7:00.
On Tuesday evening, October 20, starting at 6:30, the Brooklyn Historical Society presents a panel discussion, “Life after Surveillance in Bay Ridge’s Muslim Community”.
New York City’s post-9/11 security measures had a tremendous affect [sic] on Bay Ridge’s Muslim community. At its height, the extensive police use of informants sewed deep distrust in the neighborhood. Now that the post-post-9/11 era is upon us with an administration that says it’s moving away from heavy intelligence penetration, has life changed in Bay Ridge?
There’s more information here. The event is free, but you must reserve tickets here.
