BHS to Host Lincoln Event, Display Emancipation Proclamation

In honor of the bicentennial of Abraham Lincoln’s birth, the Brooklyn Historical Society, in conjunction with the Gilder Lehrman Institute, will present a Book Talk by Matthew Pinsker, the Pohanka Chair in American Civil War History and Associate Professor of American History at Dickinson College in Pennsylvania. Professor Pinsker is the author of Lincoln’s Sanctuary: Abraham Lincoln and the Soldiers’ Home, in which he:

…tells the tale of the Lincoln family, who escaped the oppressive heat and equally oppressive public scrutiny of Washington each summer from 1862 to 1864. They packed their White House belongings, moved to the outskirts of the city, and took up residence in a cottage located on the grounds of the Old Soldiers’ Home. “Lincoln’s Sanctuary” is a fascinating portrait of Lincoln’s stay in this place and tells the story of the President’s remarkable growth as a national leader and a private man.

The Society’s original copy of the Emancipation Proclamation will be on display at the time of this event.
