    I never could make heads or tails of the designs in the terrazzo flooring in the passageway between the elevators and the stairs to the platforms in the Clark Street subway station—as partially shown in the photo above. Perhaps some expert on hopscotch or code breaking could make some sense of this for me.

    For the heck of it, here’s a photo of 52 Clark Street, back when it was an apartment hotel, with the Indian swastika designs on the lobby floor, before the ugly recent “renovation”.

    Anyone know what’s going on at Heights Cafe. Sign said renovating, but they’ve been closed for a while and there is little sign of activity

    Ate at Gallito’s for the first time. Chips were homemade and good. Queso fundido (one of my favorite dishes) was alittle runny and they didn’t use the authentic cheese but OK. Chicken enciladas were great and service was very good. Modelo Especials were very cold!

    Speaking of food. Is everyone aware of the excellent fish monger who sets up on Saturdays at the Greenmarket? He is the real deal from way out East. He always has a tempting array of very fresh fish; his scallops and clams are first rate; his prices are competitive and the selection is broad. We who have discovered him want to be sure that this valuable resource continues to be available. Let the word go forth!

    Also noticed the other day that they’re advertising for all kinds of staff. Seems odd that the old staff wasn’t retained.

    My guess is they will expand the pizza place to the whole corner – pizza is stupid-profitable (to use the parlance of our times), even (or especially) when it’s bad pizza…

    How does Plymouth Cafe stays in business? Upper Henry Street area has too many corner stores/faux delis that are mediocre…the street really needs a good higher end shop like a small Union Market or something else in its place that the street does not already have, I think it would do great business.

    This from the MTA Arts for Transit: Clark Street Passage is an intriguing artwork within the floor of the station that uses three geometric shapes – circles, squares, and triangles against a black background. When transit customers walk down the passage they are exposed to all the configurations that can be made from these basic elements, which create a flowing sense of movement. The study of constantly shifting geometric patterns is derived from artist Ray Ring’s earlier work which was heavily influenced by early geometric abstract art from the early 20th century.

    Yes, the large space seems to be decorated with food samples here and there. I keep thinking about how it could be put to better use.

    By the way, the $26 pork chop (please don’t ask!) I bought at Della Pietra’s was really good.

    its closed on weekends, only open until around 4pm on weekdays. There must be some deal worked out cause the place must have high rent and seems to sell “food samples” is right. what a terrible waste of space.

    I don’t want to start in on Citibike again (though for some reason my mind automatically sees Citibank), but who is responsible for keeping the spaces clean? Street cleaners obviously are of no use here and businesses don’t seem to care. The space in front of Clark Street subway station is disgustingly filthy.

    I believe it is kept by citibiki themselves. They are in charge of shoveling in the winter as well as keeping it clean. Someone can correct me if I’m wrong though.

    Has anyone else noticed the rise in graffiti on Pierrepont Place and Montague Street? The same tagger went after the mailbox on the corner of Montague Street & Pierrepont Place (that was so beautifully painted by Captain Clean-up) over last weekend. This was after an initial red tag was done on the Brooklyn Law School building on 2 Pierrepont Street about a month ago. I told the super there about it and he said he didn’t know how to get it off. That brought more tagging which resulted on both the building and the mailbox. Can someone help him get it off?

    A friend in Cobble Hill recommended Summerfield Baldwin (sounds stuffy, he’s not). I’m a lawyer. I used him for a will and deed issues. Very competent, moderate rates, downtown Manhattan. 212.402-6827.

    Alta bike share is responsible for keeping the stations clean. If there is a problem with the conditions at a particular station one can complain directly to citibike or possibly through 311. Keep in mind, as the snow piles recede, months of accumulated detritus is revealed The winters filth is fairly ubiquitous this time of year, it’s not just at Citibike stations.
