The Brooklyn Symphony Orchestra cooks up a hot mix of classical music for a cold February afternoon, 3:00 p.m., on the 22nd, at the Church of St. Ann and The Holy Trinity. The price is right ($15.00, suggested donation), and for most of us, the location is perfect. It’s practically across the street. So dust off your velvet jackets, polish your rhinestone jewelry, straighten your ties, have a cocktail in the afternoon, and then get thee to the show.
The concert includes The Merry Wives of Windsor Overture from the opera by Otto Nicolai— the libretto based on Shakespeare’s comedy of a very large, very fat man, the very wonderful and iconic Falstaff. Nicolai is an heir of the classical tradition of Mozart and Beethhoven. This serves as a saucy counterpart to Ellen Taaffe Zwilich’s Concerto for Bass Trombone, Strings, Timpani and Percussion. She is a modern composer; the first woman ever to receive the Pulitzer Prize in music in 1983. This alone is worth the price of admission. The afternoon concludes with everyone’s love, Beethoven and his magisterial Symphony No. 6 in F major (“Pastoral”).
