This weekend is your last chance to see the Heights Players’ production of Steel Magnolias, which will be playing Friday and Saturday evenings at 8:00 and Sunday afternoon at 2:00, at 26 Willow Place. On Saturday at noon, at the same location, Heights Players Theater for Children will present The Wizard of Oz, a “participation play” in which kids get to join the action, helping Dorothy escape the witch, the Cowardly Lion to find his courage, and so on. Bargemusic has three “Masterworks” concerts on tap. Friday evening at 8:00 pianist and composer Alexander Peskanov will play one of his own compositions, along with piano pieces by Rachmaninoff and Stravinsky. On Saturday evening at 8:00 the Dover Quartet plays works by Schubert, Shostakovich, and Hindemith. On Sunday afternoon at 2:00 Jeffrey Swann continues his journey through the complete piano sonatas of Beethoven, with commentaries. As usual, there will be a free, family oriented “Music in Motion” concert Saturday afternoon at 3:00; doors open at 2:30. More details are here.
Brooklyn Heights Cinema, 70 Henry Street, “the last locally owned & operated neighborhood cinema in New York City,” will be showing The Place Beyond the Pines, Admission, and Ginger & Rosa. Showtimes are here. Looking ahead to next weekend, on Sunday evening, April 28 the Cinema will be having a celebration “of 40+ years of films at 70 Henry Street.” Details are here.
On Sunday, don’t forget Brooklyn Bridge Park’s Earth Day celebration at Empire Fulton Ferry (the portion of the Park adjacent to Jane’s Carousel) from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. If you get hungry, drop into Smorgasburg, which will be open in the nearby Tobacco Warehouse from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
