Squibb Park Bridge Opening: Avalanche Of Media Coverage

The opening of the 396-foot-long Squibb Park Bridge, which links Brooklyn Heights with Brooklyn Bridge Park, has fostered an avalanche of national media coverage—although, arguably, you read BHB’s on-the-spot coverage first and foremost, right?

The New York Times weighs in via a story titled “A Zigzag Offers a More Direct Route to a Park,” as does the age-old Popular Mechanics, offering a novel perspective with precise detail about the bridge’s structural & organic design.

There’s also coverage at Crain’s New York Business; Time Out New York; the New York Post (“There’s a brand-new Brooklyn bridge in town.”); New York Daily News; and The Architect’s Newspaper. How about a story in Italian at NYC travel webbie NYC-site.com?

    I’ll be curious as to whether the eventual hotel there will make the bridge a selling point to its guests – i.e. “take our pedestrian bridge up to historic Brooklyn Heights.”

    The Squibble Bridge is closing at dusk these days because the lamps aren’t working. (I went over to take some sunset pics and was denied entrance. Nanny state!)

    There will be hordes of useless tourists and other menaces in the North Heights. That bridge looks cheaply built. It looks like it bow if it had sizable crowds on it. The park is a good idea, keep it there. No need to ruin the Heights with all that .. I think this will be a source of a lot of noise, trash and petty crime.

    Gothamist is right as we all can agree, a $5 mill bridge from a street that goes directly down to the park itself, is rather pointless. It doesnt save time and who can’t cross Furman St without issue? They should have built a pedestrian draw bridge to Governor’s Island and eliminated the ferry service (thus saving the city tons of money in the future). This bridge’s purpose is largely insignificant.

    Hold on, people, the bridge is built so sturdily that I couldn’t detect any so-called bounce. If you’ve ever crossed one of those narrow swinging suspension bridges in the wilderness, you know what bounce is.

    There’s a one-inch vertical bounce, plus left-right swinging (just as with Michael Bloomberg–zing!). It’s a fun ride.

    Oh, there’s lots of bounce in the bridge. We have walked over at least 3 times in the last 3 days.

    I love the bridge. Didn’t think it was worth the $5 price tag though but having said that my husband and I really enjoy walking over the bridge. It gives us more of an incentive to get the lead out and take more strolls though the neighborhood than we otherwise would.
    I do wish they would spend money on fixing the potholes though. I fell into a pothole in front of the Pierrepont St. entrance to the park two years ago and the same hole is still there. There seems to be very little maintenance of our roads in BH. I wonder why?

    We walked over it yesterday. It’s a very fussy bridge. It’s too long, too many turns and too many chances to get stuck behind slow moving people. Why build this bridge???

    Two things:
    1. It’s great to finally be allowed access to Squibb park. I’ve only been able to view it from afar these past few years.
    2. Does anyone know if the bathrooms in Squibb are working?

    At least it is 5 months late. Sign at Squibb Park said it was to open in Fall 2012.

    The bridge is very popular now. People seem to be enjoying it. We love walking over it. You have the choice not to do so.
