Calm Before The Storm: Key Food Aisles Virtually Cleared As Residents Prepare

UPDATE: Key Food will close at 6 p.m. Sunday.
As one might expect, hundreds are rushing to neighborhood groceries to scoop up what appears to be enough staples for the remainder of the year. A stop by Key Food on Montague Street around 1 p.m. Sunday revealed a checkout line that more closely resembled the Court Street Trader Joes—wrapping all the way from the front aisles around the entire back of the store. Bread, veges, milk, eggs… gone! Spirits, however, were high, as smiles were in abundance amid the mob scene. And speaking of spirits, a clerk at nearby Montague Wine said that sales were “crazy.” Food… check! Booze… check! More images below. (Photos: CT)

its just an excuse for people to eat . if there is no power your food will go bad anyway.

Slight exaggeration: just got back from Key Foods. It’s only really bread, eggs and milk that are sold out. PSA: the store closes at 6pm this evening.

Milk and eggs, two things that go bad with no power. People are real smart.

The bread aisle at the Montague KF is strewn with a line of defrosting english muffins, as if to say, “We’re not out of bread! Why, we have many packages of buttermilk crumpets.”

I bought a brick of Mestermacher rye from the low shelf at the deli counter. That stuff is not the fluffy stuff most Americans call bread, but is great when toasted within an inch of its life.

Maybe Key Foods will take the empty shelves as an opportunity to give the place a good scrubbing. It could really use it.

I went into the bodega across the street on Montague and the nicotine addicts were in there stocking up on their cigarettes. Always interesting how people prioritize.

Eggs last quite well out of the fridge. Our friends in the UK consider us a little “ice box” obsessed and keep eggs on their counters. Just eat them that week, and you’ll be fine.
