Sarah Jessica Parker & Matthew Broderick To Call The Heights Home

Paul Giamati, meet your new neighbors. Sarah Jessica Parker and husband Matthew Broderick are purchasing a pair of townhouses in south Brooklyn Heights on State Street near Sidney Place. The New York Daily News‘ real estate guru Jason Sheftell reported late Friday that the family is closing in on a contract, after purchasing a Manhattan townhouse on East 10th St. two years ago that they never moved into.

The couple currently resides in a townhome in the West Village on Charles Street, near West Fourth Street, with their son James Wilkie, 9, and twin daughters Marion and Tabitha, almost 3. A source told the Daily News, “They loved the West Village but wanted something more private, laid-back and discreet.”

When construction is completed, the two adjoining State Street townhouses the actors purchased will create “an urban mansion of 7,000-plus square feet with a suburban-size backyard,” the News reports. Both were an “off-market” transaction, meaning the houses weren’t officially for sale, according to Sheftell. City records show both are owned by Mark and Diane Baker.

Parker and Broderick paid $18.995 million for the East 10th Street townhouse two years ago, and fully remodeled the home, which the News says is now on the market.

CORE senior vice president Doug Bowen noted, “Brooklyn Heights is the city’s first official historic landmark district; that’s how beautiful it is and what it means to New York. The price difference between the West Village and Brooklyn Heights is sometimes two, three, four times the amount. That’s why even big names are deciding to live here. It’s an easier financial commitment.”

    Jesus, Publius, would you stop criticizing the coverage that BHB is picking up from OTHER new york publications? This IS news and every time there is a report about any celebrities, you show your arrogant disdain. These people are pubic figures, this is being reported in the mainstream press, so it absolutely belongs in the Brooklyn Blog.

    If you don’t want to read about it, move on to pictures of flowers. Or is that also too invasive for you? Do daffodils also deserve their privacy?

    Publius… wasn’t he a cowardly conspirator that stabbed Julius Caesar in the back? Interesting name you chose for your bitter diatribes.

    It’s a good neighborhood for them in that there are probably fewer gawkers than the West Village. It’s an area where a celeb can wander into Tazza alone and not be bothered. And State Street is especially discrete, being farther from the promenade where the tourists tend to go.

    I don’t think they’re too high on the celebrity watch list of the paparazzi and gawkers to be a concern to residents. Sure, the occassional Sex and the City fan might show up, but fans of that show are more interested in seeing the places where the series was shot in Manhattan. Now, it would be a different story if Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie were moving in. However, I’m glad I don’t live on that block just in case I’m wrong.

    We tend to forget about John Donan and his wife who live on Willow betw Pierrepont and Clark. Altho he has not starred in a show, he has appeared in many top rated shows (Damages, L&O and commercials).

    Sarah Jessica and Matthew lived on Charles St. in the W. Village.
    I passed by their house several times when I was in the neighborhood and there were always tourists either sitting on their stoop or taking pictures from across the street. No wonder they wanted out of the city. I think they will be able to live here in peace.
    At least I hope so.
    I cannot imagine how they felt looking out the window of their brownstone at tourists parking themselves on the stoop like they owned the place.
    Can you imagine the gall?
    I do miss seeing Gabriel Byrne though.

    Ah, his and her row houses. There’s something really depressing about this news. Mainly, that they can afford to buy houses in pairs, and I can barely afford shoes for both feet.

    But that’s OK–sort of–because Matthew is no longer, no matter the boyish moues and rouged cheeks, YOUNG.

    While I welcome anyone and everyone to join us in Brooklyn Heights, I don’t envy their neighbors.

    Lots of tourists taking photos. God help them ic tour busses try to navigate the turns on and off State street. Lots of paparazzi camped out at all hours, leaving trash and cigarette butts and lots of large black vehicles idling (and blocking traffic? How wide is State street there?) waiting for family members to cone out and be whisked to third destinations.

    (Or maybe I’m wrong. Maybe they’ll just stroll up to Clinton Street and grab the next yellow cab that passes by or even makes their way all the way up to Court Street and hop on the 4/5. Who knows? Time will tell.)

    I’m. 90% sure these 2 properties are already combined and have been for some time. A combo property on that side of that block was on the house you’re ~2003 to ~2005 as I recall.

    The garden, garden level and parlor level were fully combined. The upper 2 or 3 floors of one house was a rental do tge second stoop was in use.

    Maybe they’ll set up one stoop as if it were in use and the tourists can stake it out and they’ll sneak out the other stoop. ;-)

    Yes, it’s a little obscene when you think about one family having that much space. On the other hand, it’s still nothing compared to the huge compounds celebrities own in the Hamptons or California. They’ll probably keep the place in good condition too, which is always a plus.

    Indeed, it’s a lot of space but no larger than recent transactions like the Capote house and 212 Columbia Heights or the 1.5x width mansions on Remsen between Hicks and Henry or the 1960’s house on Willow Place.

    And it will hold a family of 5 plus a staff member or two I suspect so while it’s still an absurd amount of space per person it’s fuller than some of the properties I mentioned… Not to mention fuller than many McMansions that have spread all over Suburban and Exurban America like a plague over the last 20 years.

    People who attract the press, idling limos, clueless tourists, stalkers, etc. belong in walled compounds in CA, not in a neighborhood of regular people who want nothing more than to mind their own business.

    Most of the idling limos I have seen are waiting for the “regular” people who live here in BH. We have quite a few celebrities living here already and to my knowledge they live here peacefully.

    Kinda intresting how all the coments get posted and no one knows anything about the property, yes the two buildings are combinded on the garden and parlor floors. the upper 2 floors on one side are seperate appartments. the back yard is a double yard.
    and you have all been fooled by the press again. the Buildings are not for sale.

    I have worked with SJP on a few commercials. She is lovely and very family minded.
    If we all leave her and her family alone…and respect their choice to live and enjoy Bk Heights,(as my husband and I have as recent residents) then all will be great.
    It will be best if we all choose to NOT be stalkers and to be relaxed with them as wonderful additions to the community.
    Calm down everyone..they are people too and need to
    enjoy their lives, especially for the sake of the children.
    Make us all be proud people in Bk Heights to embrace this concept that anyone can live here without concerns.
