This afternoon, The Renaissance Street Singers were performing on the sidewalk by the St. George Hotel on Henry Street.
Since 1973, The Renaissance Street Singers of New York have sung 15th- and 16th-century music a cappella on the sidewalks and in the public spaces of New York. The motivation is a love for this music and the wish to share it with others. Concerts are two or three Sundays a month, usually 2 to 4 pm, always free.
Passers-by hear polyphonic motets, hymns, magnificats, Psalms, mass sections and other sacred music by Dufay, Ockeghem, Josquin, Senfl, Palestrina, Byrd, Victoria and Cardoso, and their contemporaries.
We welcome new members. Rehearsals are Thursdays, 7 to 9:30 pm. If you can read music, carry a part confidently, blend well and attend regularly, please call.
If you are interested in participating, or for details of future concerts, call the director, John Hetland, at 212-989-7606, or visit the group’s website at www.streetsingers.org
