A new arts center for kids, Le Meraviglie (The Wonders in English), will open next week at 108 Montague St. on the second floor. The center will offer a summer program starting on June 28 through July for 5 to 11 year olds. In the fall, a morning program for 2 to 4 year olds and their grown-ups will be offered, including painting, clay exploration, mixed media, and Italian story-time. In the afternoons, classes will be offered for 5 to 11 year olds, covering cartooning, arts and theater, printmaking, multi-media sculpture and more.
Founder Piera Bonerba, who lives in Brooklyn Heights with her family, shared:
Le Meraviglie is my dream. It draws on my experience as an artist and an art teacher for the past eight years at Scuola d’Italia on the Upper East Side, where I’ve taught, and developed the curriculum for, students from pre-K through fifth grade.
My approach there – and here at Le Meraviglie – has been inspired by what the great Reggio Emilia educator Loris Malaguzzi called the hundred languages, the infinite ways that children can ‘express, explore, and connect their thoughts, feelings and imaginings.’ At Le Meraviglie we will do this expressing – and exploring and connecting – through a wide variety of media as we draw, paint, sculpt, collage, cartoon, make prints, work with textiles, and each week learn about, and be inspired by, a different artist.
