How to View the 4th of July Fireworks (or Avoid the Crowds)

Brace yourselves neighbors, this year the Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks return to Brooklyn Heights. The Grucci Family pyrotechnic spectacular is set to launch from the Brooklyn Bridge and four barges in the East River between Piers 1 and 6 of Brooklyn Bridge Park. The premium viewing locations are The Brooklyn Heights Promenade, Brooklyn Bridge Park and Dumbo’s Main/Street and Carousel area.

It goes without saying massive crowds are to be expected along with street closures, parking restrictions, frozen zones, checkpoints and bag inspections. The thirty-minute show pops off at 9:30. The Montague BID sent out this primer with ALL the details:

Last but not least, Andrea from Rocco & Jezebel would like to remind you not to forget about your pets this holiday. The explosions can easily spook your fur-baby. If you must bring your dog to the show, keep them on a leash at all times to prevent them from bolting off.  Have a safe and happy 4th everyone!

can anyone enlighten me as to what exactly this document means? i want to make sure my car doesn’t get stuck behind the lines. if i park on State street, which isn’t listed as a no-parking street am I going to be able to get my car out of the neighborhood as long as I get past Court Street by 2pm Thursday?

Yeah just to be safe I’d get outta there before 2 on the 4th.

I would guess that they will be towing all cars parked on streets listed as no parking.

No parking/frozen zones begin at 11:00 p,m on Wednesday July 3rd. If your car is in a parking garage and you need to go in or out, you must do it before 2;00 pm on the 4th. That’s when the streets will close to traffic. The streets will be closed to traffic until midnight on the 4th.

A quick phone call to the 84th precinct will yield answers.

    In theory…
The fine print in the announcement says:
“ADDITIONAL STREETS MAY BE UTILIZED AS NO PARKING AND FROZEN ZONES IF NECESSARY” and “MEMBERS OF THE COMMUNITY SHOULD GIVE THEMSELVES EXTRA TIME GETTING TO AND FROM THEIR DESTINATION DUE TO POSSIBLE UNSCHEDULED STREET CLOSURES”
It basically means, leave your car anywhere in the area and you might not be able to move it or it may be towed.

I’m leaving early Wednesday morning and won’t be back till Tuesday. I wish everyone the best of luck dealing with the mayhem.

Likewise, I’m getting out of Dodge. At least we don’t have tanks rolling down Montague Street.

I’ll be staying inside in air conditioning. Nothing like the smell of gunpowder blowing in your windows!

Here’s one of my photos of the fireworks, back when the World Trade Center towers were the background:

It was a zoo, after. I asked a neighbor if she knew why. She said, the park. Of course! Last night was the first harbor fireworks since the BBP opened. The police worked hard to keep the HUGE crowds moving. Sometime after midnight, streets opened and trains were bearable.

Sure hope there’s A Better Way next time.

BTW: my guests and I thought the show was sophisticated, gorgeous and truly enjoyable.
