Now We Know What’s Replacing Housing Works

Just what we all wanted and needed: another real estate office. The words above “Halstead” in the large window are “The new home of”…

Where was the old Halstead office?

Could “ironic” be properly applied here?

Perhaps we can hope that something interesting will go in the old Halstead space, on Montague between Clinton and Henry.

Years ago I recall discovering that the (infamous) Christopher Street Bookstore, where literature of a decidedly non-literary sort was purveyed, had become, almost overnight, a maternity boutique.

Putting aside the irony of the identity-witch, this once and forever summed up gentrification to me, the exchange of a treasured community resource for expensive frou-frou.

The wasted value of the real estate agencies continually reshuffling their offices on Montague St could feed a small nation. My head spins from trying to keep track of who’s on first…

Guilty, David. Feel free to, uh, disseminate the term….

Shoot, what a shame. Housing Works was one of the very few places on Montague i patronized. A real loss for the nabe.

To think that Montague Street was once cited in a Bob Dylan song for “music in the cafes at night and revolution in the air.”

I wonder if Housing Works could open a drop-off place in BH where people with donations could bring them? Perhaps I’ll contact HW. I know our store sent several trucks a week to the other stores.

I will spraypaint it across the usurping Halstead storefront.

    This socks?

In the meantime I think we’ve found the title of Bob Dylan’s next album.
