Times: Squibb Park Pedestrian Bridge Will Be Fixed

The “bouncy” pedestrian bridge connecting Squibb Park and Brooklyn Bridge Park, closed for the past two years because it bounced and swayed too much, “should reopen next spring” according to “[p]ark officials” quoted in this New York Times story. According to Brooklyn Bridge Park Corporation President Regina Myer the bridge will be less bouncy–an engineer who studied the bridge’s problems and designed a solution is quoted in the Times as saying it will be about a half as bouncy as before–but that safety is the primary consideration. The Times notes that the cost of the repair has yet to be determined, but that the BBPC has a suit underway against the designers and constructors of the bridge.

Huh ? The NYT story backs everything I said.

Just saying that “can’t” is a pretty strong word. Maybe it’s more about the amount of effort (or lack of same) that we’re willing to invest to change one or more of the outcomes you say we can’t change.

It’s clear that you think that all the delays in fixing the bridge revolve around finding the right engineering solution. Some of your neighbors believe that the apparent lack of engineering progress is actually a ruse to keep the bridge closed.

Of the handful of solutions or responses I listed, did any stand out to you as achievable if only we’d all put our heads together or something? Did none of them strike you as inappropriate?

This particular sub-thread is about the correlation of the bouncy bridge (which connects to Squibb Park at Columbia Heights and Middagh) to crime in the north Heights. My contention was that we don’t have evidence to directly link the bridge to this crime (some of which was exemplified by Andrew’s earlier post), although a complete absence of any crime since the bridge’s closure would be acceptable evidence of this link. (Of course, such an absence of crime does not exist, which must mean these criminal masterminds will make their way to the north Heights with or without the bouncy bridge, maybe because North Brooklyn Heights is…in Brooklyn!)

So…what does the well-known Joralemon sucker punch have to do with this?

Sigh. I know you’re going to do whatever you want to do and not pay attention to random strangers on the internet. But can you at least entertain the idea of not expending effort on demeaning others for no good reason?

You’re accomplishing nothing whatsoever by doing so. And I read the other comments about nothing here really accomplishing anything and disagree with that assessment. Those who offer positive contributions and insights with a reasonable effort toward respect – and who don’t get into petty ego wars with others they disagree with – are absolutely making a difference by spreading ideas, encouraging dialogue, and offering some subsection of this community a bit of perspective they otherwise might not have.

But going out of your way to tell someone you don’t value them without anything positive or constructive to add on top of that offers absolutely nothing.

Please try to respect this community as you continue to be a participating member here.

greg, please spare me te stump speeches, if you find something offensive in the proven observation that things always play out predictably in this forum, that is an issue with you. The hypersensitivity and double standards I see here are tiring. people like arch have outright called others idiots and others are routinely snarky and confrontational for no reason. yet they don’t see it because the cabal gets together to pick on others that they accuse of picking on them.

  • redlola

see below where arch is calling someone’s assertion frivolous. why don’t you jump on that as by most people’s standards, frivolous is worse than predictable especially when I included myself in the predictable assignation.

Rich Saint Ann’s kids damage property too, you racist, classist scumbag.
