Re-Zoning Update: DOE to Discuss Draft Scenarios at CEC’s 9/1 Business Meeting

CEC13Brooklyn made the following announcement on Sunday morning:

“On Friday, August 28, the New York City Department of Education’s Office of District Planning (DOE – ODP) requested placement on the Agenda for the CEC’s public business meeting on Tuesday, September 1. The ODP intends to share with the CEC and the public at least one preliminary scenario for rezoning PS 8, which they have said will include a preliminary map and additional scenario details.

We have agreed to this request and are presently revising our agenda to reflect the DOE’s presentation. The expected presentation is NOT a formal zoning proposal (i.e., it does not begin a timeline that would require a CEC vote within 45 days); rather it is aimed at generating community and CEC input toward a formal zoning proposal that the DOE will submit at a later date.

Please note that, despite our requests for an opportunity to review any scenarios in advance so as to better engage our communities, the DOE has NOT provided the CEC any specific information about its preliminary scenario(s) and we are therefore unable to share any details at this time.

Tuesday’s meeting starts at 6:30 pm at the District Office at 355 Park Place at Underhill Ave in Prospect Heights.

We will share any additional information, including a revised agenda, as it becomes available.”

COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT IS CRUCIAL:

The CEC calls input from the community “crucial” to the re-zoning process.   If you are unable to attend Tuesday’s meeting, please send in your feedback and concerns on re-zoning HERE: http://cec13.org/hot-topics/rezoning/rezoning-comments/ Your comments will be sent to the CEC and the DOE’s Office of District Planning simultaneously.

In addition, the Downtown Brooklyn School Planning Taskforce is seeking re-zoning comments via a short survey from families who reside in Dumbo and Vinegar Hill.

SAVE THE DATE for the evening of Tuesday, Sept 30th for the CEC’s Calendar Meeting where if all goes well, the CEC and DOE expect to unveil more final re-zoning plans to the public.

So DUMBO is no longer in P.S. 8’s zone? If so, did the other nearby schools’ zone increase as a result?

Yes, by quite a bit. At the meeting tonight, about which I’ll be posting later, it was noted that P.S. 8’s zone is one of the largest in the entire city, while P.S. 307’s, which would get DUMBO and Vinegar Hill if the draft proposal–it’s just a draft now–gets approved, is one of the smallest.

This makes complete sense!!! Thank you!!!
