Planning Meeting Tonight for the Brooklyn Heights Library

Michael Randazzo sends us the following:

The Brooklyn Public Library invites all to join the second community brainstorming session in the Brooklyn Heights Branch’s first floor auditorium, 280 Cadman Plaza West, at 6:30 p.m tonight. The purpose is to discuss plans for the interior layout of the proposed new Brooklyn Heights Branch Library. Representatives of BPL and of Marvel Architects, designers of the new library, will be present to hear and discuss your suggestions.

Please feel free to bring your constructive ideas, your passion about the BPL’s vital mission serving the community, and perhaps even your frustrated desires to play architect.

There’s more information here.

I can’t make it tonight but here’s my suggestion for the library: please don’t build a 30-story tower on top of it. The increased (and still increasing) density in the neighborhood can’t handle it . . . .

There needs to be a put your money where your mouth is advocacy effort on the part of interested politicos. They must be willing to take a stand and take legal steps to block the developers. Beyond that, wealthy residents with cash can engage a legal team to move this fight along.

I hope the library can be more a part of the life of the BH community. Book readings and discussions, yes. But what a perfect opportunity for a program where local residents read to preschoolers and young readers. There are plenty of people with time to contribute, but I had to travel to Sunset Park to do it. The facilities need to be able to accommodate much more thoughtful programming than the current library offers.
