A Lot of Action on Montague Street: Friend of a Farmer Building, Connecticut Muffin Closes

BHB has confirmed that Montague Street’s Connecticut Muffin has closed its doors forever. Workers were told yesterday that the store would be closing.

No word on an opening date yet (or the fate of the displaced anchor) but Friend of a Farmer tweeted this update:

Sorry to see Connecticut Muffin go, and I think it’s really lousy that they only told the workers at the last minute. One of the gentleman who works there has worked there for years.

WHY DID THE CLOSE??? what happened :(

The obvious answer is that the building’s owner saw an opportunity to attract a tenant that would generate enough cash to be able to pay more rent. Watch out for a national junk food chain.

  • Andrew Porter

I note that the former Crumbs space on Montague remains empty, with no “for rent” sign or any other notice that the chain intends to return to that site. Anyone know what’s happening there?

On the face of it, without knowing the inner-workings of the company, Connecticut Muffin acted shamefully by notifying its employees on Montague Street that they would be out of a job with no notice. I’m hoping that the workers will be given severance pay. Because of this action, I will boycott buying from any Connecticut Muffin store. The owners of CM can redeem themselves by letting the public know how it intends to right this despicable action. A statement pasted on the window the shuttered store is one suggestion. Blaming a greedy landlord does not absolve them.

14 years of coffee – gone! That makes me sad.
    So long, CT Muffins.

The Connecticut Muffin in Ft Green is also closed. I was near BAM last week and they were already gone. Haven’t been near the Park Slope location lately, but perhaps its a company-wide thing and not just a greedy landlord thing.

The Fort Greene Connecticut Muffin on Myrtle Avenue was open last Friday – is that the one that’s described as “closed,” or the one closer to BAM?

  • GHB

Sorry to see this happen. Always liked to stop in for coffee and a scone on weekend mornings.

The “Dear Customers” sign nestled among the newspapers inside the window invites visits to “our other locations.”

And here is the list of other locations (click on photo to enlarge):

I wonder what effect Le Pain Quotidian had on CT Muffin. Le Pain offered a more upscale experience and one could argue, fancier pastry items, right next door. But I spent many an afternoon in CT Muffin’s upstairs area, where you could work or have a coffee with friends with no one bothering you. And the staff was always friendly. I fear the replacement will be another national chain or nail salon.

    Hello to all
We would like to thank everyone for all the wonderful years of business and memories. Unfortunately it was time to move on because of lack of business. However we are very thankful and grateful for having been part of the Brooklyn Heights neighbor for 19 years. We are happy to say that we have absorbed 95 percent of all employees in our other stores. We have nothing but good things to say about the people of Brooklyn Heights as well as the landlords of the property. Again we thank everyone who has supported us in the past and we hope to see you all soon in our other locations.

Exciting….and a much better pub-style space than the original. Hope it’s true.

does anyone know if yusef and elar were moved to another shop? i agree it’s harsh to pull employees from a job that they’ve worked at for over a decade without notice. they have many friends here.

    DEVELOPING… we’re on it.

  • ldny

No, sorry – I was referring to the one on Lafayette & Fulton. That one is closed. I forgot there was one on Myrtle as well. Glad to know that some of the other locs are still open!

  • ldny

So besides Montague and Lafayette, which other locations were closed?
