Newspaper Thief Caught on Tape in Brooklyn Heights

BHB contributor/Pierrpont Street resident Peter Kaufman tweeted us surveillance video of a man stealing newspapers from his building’s lobby. NYPD has been notified.

Is this some sort of recycling racket or is the alleged paper pilferer a real news junkie? You decide.

    Amazing how many security cameras are in the neighborhood. Hope it helps. Now to have some video camera in the Northern Heights to help with the vandalism occuring on the weekends.

    I’ve seen something similar happen on Garden Pl and then followed the guy to the newsstand on Court/Joralemon and watched him resell the papers…

    We live on Joralemon and our NYT papers are stolen about once a week (usually on Monday) – wonder if it is connected to this incident?

    Why are the newspapers left in the building’s lobby instead of being delivered to subscribers’ apartment doors?

    Homer said “lobby”, but the footage shows a vestibule. There is probably no (manned) lobby, so the inner door would be locked.

    They just ran a segment on ABC local news that newspapers are being stolen in other parts of the city and Long Island. They said people steal them for the coupons. The most stolen editions are the Sunday New York Times.

    My paper was also stolen yesterday. Very annoying considering that a large portion of my morning (generally 2 hours) revolves around reading the NYTimes with my java from Brooklyn Roasting Company or Le Pain Quotidian here in Brooklyn. Purchasing a paper from the newsstand for $2.50 is not the way to start my day. Nice video capture Peter.

    Karl – I saw the guy this morning, while on my bike.

    He was walking down Pierrepont Street, with a big blue sack..furtively looking in doorways.

    My camera was in my knapsack, but I got the license plate of his car.

    Just called the 84th Pct – no answer at Detective Squad. Developing.
