Brooklyn Bridge Facade Wall Collapses

Multiple media outlets are reporting a serious collapse of the facade wall on the walkway to the Brooklyn Bridge at Washington and Prospect Streets.

From the Brooklyn Daily Eagle: The collapse, which injured two pedestrians, took place in the middle of a wild storm which brought hundreds of explosive lightening (sic) strikes and flooding to the area.

The report came in to 9-1-1 at 7:42 p.m

News 12 Brooklyn’s Allison Papson posted updated information about injuries:

At last report, Cadman Plaza West was closed to traffic and the area cordoned off.

Update: Crews worked all night and all streets are open.

CBS NY reports that 5 people were taken to Bellevue Hospital for minor injuries.

I received a fascinating notice from the Brooklyn Heights Association:

“POLICE AND SANITATION ALERT FOR JULY 4TH

NYC DEPARTMENT OF SANITATION UPDATE REGARDING JULY 4TH – EXTREME LITTER CONDITIONS ARE POSSIBLE

Starting July 3, the DSNY will remove corner litter baskets from several Brooklyn Heights corridors, on orders from the NYPD.

DSNY promises to have clean-up crews working throughout Brooklyn Heights on both Friday and Saturday. Please review our website posting here for a more detailed description. ”

               **********************************************

Brooklyn Heights will be packed with thousands of partying celebrants, overflowing the sidewalks, walking in the gutters. To this mix we add a gazillion  garbage trucks competing with the pedestrians for space. Just recently an unfortunate woman died when a garbage truck ran her over. I believe DSNY & NYPD have created an unsafe policy in their efforts to do their best to keep us safe.

This is why we can’t have nice things.

“Extreme litter”…it never ceases to amaze me why some people feel it’s okay to visit a neighborhood and proceed to drop their trash on the local sidewalks, stoops, yards, etc. Is it really that hard to put in a bag and take it with you?

Though why the the DSNY is removing already scarce litter baskets is also rather disturbing.

  • MONTague

Because you can put bombs in trash cans. Now is a little litter that will be cleaned up in 24 hours all that bad? Stop tarting the heights like it’s some kind of delicate artifact.

Jesus Dave Walentas was spot on about people who live here.

What do any of these comments have to do with this post?

  • Jorale-man

I don’t subscribe to such paranoia.

  • M

    When do they ever?

  • Justine Swartz

I am concerned about the health and safety of our neighbors. This situation is an accident waiting to happen.

  • Frenchbull

haters gonna hate, can’t we all get along at least for a moment? better to let walentas disappear into sunset

  • Justine Swartz

Why have all the comments except Teresa’s been censored?

  • Jorale-man

I’m not sure but that seems rather heavy-handed. You’d think there would at least be an explanation when they excised the comments they didn’t like.

Were those the comments about how the city was putting us in danger by planning to run garbage trucks this holiday, because we might be run over like that poor lady who was retrieving her dog? I almost flagged those myself. Maybe others did.
