News Flash: Brooklyn Bidding for 2016 Democratic Convention

The New York Times reports that Mayor Bill de Blasio has announced a bid for Brooklyn to host the 2016 Democratic Convention. The proposal is for Barclays Center to be the “anchor venue” for the event, “with accommodations and other events to be spread across the city’s other four boroughs.”

The Times piece calls Brooklyn “a nexus of the new Democratic left that has morphed from working-class enclave to a gritty, global arbiter of cool” and notes that, should the Democrats decide to have their convention here, it would be a departure form their recent pattern of holding them in what are considered “swing states.”

“A nexus of the new Democratic left”

Glad I am now gone from Brooklyn

There are too many donkeys in Brooklyn already.

This fits perfectly with my suggestion that the library on cadman plaza add two floors as part of an economic development project funded jointly by the state and city . One floor to be a Brooklyn Welcome Center to promote tourism and a second floor to be the home of the Jackie Robinson museum. Our newly refurbished library needs a writers room highlighting the work of our homegrown writers. Both will create jobs, and maintain the public purpose of the site which was originally taken under an urban renewal plan. Add a bookstore and a cafe and we have a win, win. As you know I believe the current BPL plan to destroy the branch and build condos is a loser for all but the developers

  • DIBS

Yes. not a day goes by that you don’t remind us

  • Ellymay

Great idea! Have you passed it on to the powers that be?

  • marshasrimler

gee you sound like stephen sondheim

  • marshasrimler

yes but the BPL people are steamrolling ahead with their plan.Others need to talk it up
with our electeds and our borough president eric adams who I believe is looking for a creative solution..thanks

Can’t you keep your comments regarding the library in threads about the library? I think there is a new thread about the library that you can go to. Get involved with one of the library groups if you are so concerned. Your comments are starting to sound like a broken record. Stifle it will ya. Geez!

  • marshasrimler

this is not all about the library it is about an economic oppty which you totally ignore. You stifle it. Mr. nasty

  • Chubby Burkhardt

Great idea, Marsha, for revitalizing the library building without having to sell our public property to build another huge high rise condo. DIBS – if you have something interesting to say about things going on in Brooklyn Heights, this would be the forum for that, but so far, all I read from you are negative, cranky and nasty comments. And, if you’re gone from Brooklyn, as you say you are, perhaps you now need to find another forum in your local area to for your remarks.

  • DIBS

I’ll take that under advisement. I just don’t want the lunatics running the asylum while I am away. I’ll be back every other month or so. You have a nice day, Carlotta.

There are many new hotels rising in downtown Brooklyn, and I believe the entire convention’s attendees could be housed here, with perhaps overflow in lower Manhattan. The NYPD would need to find some sort of decrepit facility, however, to hold the protesters it arrests and holds for more time than legally permitted, as it did when the Repubs were here last time.
