Last Minute Weekend Suggestions

Hoops fans can get a preview of things to come at the Tobacco Warehouse, Water Street at New Dock Street, on Friday and Saturday (August 23 and 24) evenings starting at 7:00, as the Under Armour Elite 24 Tournament presents the cream of upcoming high school players from the classes of 2014, 15, and 16–some of the 2014 class have already committed to major college programs–divided into two teams: Team Bed-Stuy and Team Coney Island. The action starts Friday with slam dunk and skills contests, and climaxes Saturday when the two teams play. More info and team rosters are here.

Bargemusic has three “Masterworks” series concerts scheduled. On Friday evening at 8:00 pianist Gleb Ivanov will play works by Schubert and Liszt. The concert Saturday evening at 8:00 will feature works by Milhaud, Shostakovich, Bernstein, Chopin, Rimski Korsakov, Ravel, and Mozart performed by Mark Peskanov on violin, Russell Harlow on clarinet, Leslie Harlow on viola, and Doris Stevenson on piano. Sunday afternoon at 2:00 will conclude the performances of the complete solo cello suites by J.S. Bach, with commentaries, by Jeffrey Solow. On Saturday afternoon at 3:00 there will be a free, family oriented “Music in Motion” concert, program and musicians TBA. The doors open at 2:30; it’s first come, first seated.
