Plymouth Church will host its Juneteenth Celebration on Sunday, June 9 at 7 p.m., featuring performances by Daptone Recording artist Naomi Shelton & The Gospel Queens and Asthmatic Kitty’s The Welcome Wagon. Both acts perform gospel music, and are produced by Sufjan Stevens.
The 2013 celebration is the historic church’s 144th Juneteenth Celebration, which commemorates the ending of slavery in the U.S. Brooklyn was obviously an essential locale for slaves seeking freedom, with parts of the underground railroad in the borough, helping slaves north to find freedom in Canada. In addition, Plymouth Church was a leader in the abolitionist movement, as home base for Henry Ward Beecher.
Brooklyn-bred Naomi Shelton & the Gospel Queens and The Welcome Wagon are renowned for gospel music peppered with soul (Shelton) and indie pop (The Welcome Wagon).
