Asteria Charms; Next Up: Tenor Heroics

Romance is the theme for Theater 2020 this season. Asteria (Eric Redlinger and Susan Rhyne; photo) provided an afternoon of Arthurian romance for a rapt audience at St. Charles Borromeo Church on Saturday. Lest you think that medieval romance is all gallant knights and blushing damsels, consider the words (translated from the French) of one of the songs Asteria performed, Entre vous nouveaux mariés, which is dated approximately 1420:

Among ye newlyweds,
Good health and happy life.
Watch out that you do not fall asleep
Like it happened with the other girl!

On Saturday, March 2, Theater 2020 will present Ein Heldenleben! (A Hero’s Life), an exploration of the German heldentenor (heroic tenor) tradition, as expressed in works by Handel, Mozart, Wagner, Richard Strauss, and Korngold, sung by Marc Deaton accompanied on piano by Michael Fennelly. The recital begins at 3:00 p.m. (doors open at 2:30) at St. Charles Borromeo Church, 21 Sidney Place. Admission is a suggested donation of $20.

Theater 2020 will mount a production of Shakespeare’s romantic comedy A Midsummer Night’s Dream in May. We’ll post more info when available.
