‘That’s A Fact': Long Island College Hospital Is Closing

Doctors at the financially ailing Long Island College Hospital in Cobble Hill have been informed that the medical facility is closing, with no room for debate. According to Dr. John Romonelli, past president of the LICH medical staff, on Monday night, SUNY Downstate Medical Center’s current president, Dr. John Williams, “came in and announced the closure of LICH. That’s a fact,” he told the New York Post.

In a closed door meeting, Williams said it is necessary to sacrifice the 155-year-old LICH at 339 Hicks Street to save the rest of the enterprise: “The last thing I want to do is have people lose their jobs, but LICH could bring down SUNY Downstate and that’s something I’m trying to prevent.” LICH has only a 50% occupancy rate of its hospital beds, say officials at SUNY, which owns LICH.

Earlier Monday, the Brooklyn Eagle’s Mary Frost reported that the SUNY board of trustees would hold a brief public hearing on LICH Thursday afternoon, before deciding LICH’s fate in a vote early Friday morning.

Word is that the property could be sold and converted into luxury housing.

    Gerry,
Is this really you? I see actual punctuation for the first time. Periods, question marks.
Oh, and no run on sentences.
    Who really posted this?

  • Wiley E.

Gerry, you are a hot dog.

There is also Brooklyn General in case of an emergency, over on Dekalb Ave. close to Flatbush. I had to go to the ER there once while in college and though I don’t recommend it, it’s better than nothing in an emergency. Not all of us can have three cars like Gerry and somehow be able to hover over the traffic on the bridge.

Itap917, no YOU get over yourself. On more than one occasion I had made it clear to fellow bloggers that I enjoy my success and my ego and if y’all dont care for me then skip my comments as I skip those that I do not care for either.

  • Gerry

@ Itap917 your punctuation has been deplorable your run on sentences are that bad and your comments are poorly written. However poor writing is not a crime I enjoy your poorly written comments keep them comming.

  • Gerry

I have been called worse that that.

no one is surprised, and yet you think you don’t alienate everyone around you

Just a note that the wonderful Dr Moshman from Remsen Street teaches at the dental clinic on Wednesdays. I have no idea what will happen to that clinic now.

The curse of topic drift, aided by comments from Gerry, who frequently upsets other people…

I’ve also used the Urgent Care facility at Memorial Sloan Kettering, when I had complications due to my cancer treatment.

A friend of mine had a bicycle accident and we took him to Beekman Hospital, whose ER was a welcome contrast to that of LICH. I will go there in the future. It’s just over the Brooklyn Bridge.

Somehow I doubt that Trader Joe’s, Sahadi’s, Urban Outfitters, Barney’s, and the many other stores near LICH are dependent on it for customers.

    Gerry,
Why do you feel the need to brag all the time. It’s not necessary. You can try to make a coherent point without all the bragging. I could blow your socks off if I chose to brag about myself, my gifted children, blah blah blah. And so could others on this blog. You don’t have to make your point by trying to diminish others in the process.

  • Gerry

I have no control over how you interpret my comments. In fact i could care less how you or anyone else feel about me. If you do not like what i say thats your problem.

UPDATE: I just made an appointment for a cleaning next week at the dental clinic at LICH. I was told by office staff that Lutheran, who runs the dental clinic, is looking for a new location in the neighborhood.

The sharp S, eh? A hiss at the end of a dis.

I wonder if in psychology a technical term exists for “Freudian typo”. I’ll bet the Germans have a word for it.

LICH the hospital is not the problem. Its inept executive managers have been & still are. Instead of closing the place, Downstate should sell the hospital to Northshore LIJ because that organization does know how to grow & manage a hospital & it’s finances

if brownstone Brooklyn is truly concerned about the loss of a full service hospital from its neighborhood, and the effects that will have on their healthcare, the local economy, the neighborhood, and their homeowner’s insurance rates (increased when no hospital is nearby), they need to start calling & writing the Department of Health Commissioner & Gov Cuomo – those guys get to make the final decision. Lots of calls made so far this week, so if the Gov’s voicemail has gotten full again, try email or tweet: @NYGovCuomo #SaveLICH #Brooklyn

sorry buddy youre wrong. CEO Stanley Brezenoff & Continuum Health Partners of Beth Israel raped & plundered LICH, then sold it to the state which gave it to SUNY Downstate. Downstate then ignored and neglected it. It didn’t even bother to bill insurance companies for LICH hospital or physician services to its patients for most of the 2 years since the merger. Its hasn’t collected the tens of millions of $$ in govt reimbursements for patient’s care & that money is there just waiting to be collected. LICH didn’t do this to itself — its step-parents did it all, If LICH had been allowed to be in control of itself, it wouldn’t be in this situation.

yup. and then a drunk driver runs a red light just as youre crossing the street. nobody ever has plans on being in an emergency room, hence, the use of the word “emergency”. But youre free to go wherever you like & no one would try to stop you. Please give the same consideration to others.

a friend of mine conducted an experiment for his psychology class & adopted a similar persona. he was studying the effect that persona would have on other posters & how quickly they could be distracted from the topic & focus the discussion on him. Actually, the other posters were the specimens that he was experimenting on. suggestion: don’t give Gerry the time of day. ignore

we’re talking about losing a whole hospital here – not just an emergency room. if you get stabilized in the ER & need to get admitted to a critical care unit or any other bed, what do you do? get back in the ambulance & look for a hospital to continue the care the ER started? The fight is on for survival of the full- service hospital. Just getting to keep an ER is not acceptable.
