Montague Street BID will once again adorn trees along the commercial strip with holiday lights starting today. The New York Daily News writes about the little known process of getting the necessary permits to light up public trees:
NY Daily News: A (no) fine time for lighting city trees…: “If someone reports it, we check it out and talk to people about how to make it legal and safe,” he said.
So far, the city has received 15 applications for permits this season, most of them from business improvement districts.
The Montague Street Business Improvement District, which will light three dozen trees in Brooklyn Heights Monday, was one of them.
“I respect the Parks Department’s interest in who is messing around with their trees,” said Chelsea Mauldin, executive director of the improvement district.
