Open Thread Wednesday, October 3, 2012

It was on this day in 1951 that the “Shot Heard ‘Round the World” occurred, when the New York Giants’ Bobby Thomson hit a game-winning home run in the bottom of the ninth off Brooklyn Dodgers pitcher Ralph Branca, to win the National League pennant after being down 14 games. Mind you, four years later, the Dodgers would win the World Series against the Yankees, gathering afterward to celebrate in the lobby of Brooklyn Heights’ Hotel Bossert.

So on this BHB Open Thread Wednesday for October 4, 2012, what’s happening in your world? Comment away! (Photo: Chuck Taylor)

Has anyone noticed that the fence behind the southernmost brownstone behind the Promenade on Remsen has been removed, revealing a tiny pond with lilly pads and goldfish in it? You can see it best from the curving path between the end of Remsen and the Promenade. It’s gorgeous!

    @DrewB

I just received a notice from TW that I have to pay close to $4 every month to rent the Arris modem they gave me. It said I could use my own compatible modem. I checked their online list of compatible modems which included a Motorola modem (SB5101U) that’s available at J&R for $60. I’m hoping Verizon’s FiOS service reaches my block next year.

    Here we go.
I’m all for “Open Threat Thursday”, but it doesn’t exist yet.

I stepped on a massive “present” (as some of you like to call them) on the Northwest corner of Pierrepont and Hicks, yesterday evening. I was talking with my father while rounding the corner and boom. It was so massive, I was blown away at the thought of the Sasquatch-like beast that must have left it behind.

That being said, IF YOU OWN A DOG AND YOU DO NOT CLEAN UP AFTER IT, GET RID OF YOUR DOG. YOU DON’T DESERVE TO OWN ONE.

Friendly neighbors, if you own a dog (like myself) and you happen to have a dog walker (which I do NOT), PLEASE inform your dog walker that it is very important for them to clean up after said dogs.
I fear (as I have seen happen in the past) that this may be the issue.
If you read this and your dog is the culprit, maybe we can meet up someday and you can give me some money towards a new pair of Vans old school classics.

    Adult or child?

  • Wanderer

She’s crafty, was it an adult or child? looking for adults bitten there.

    Thanks Tiger Lily!

I don’t think Grimaldi’s is that great. I really hate the way they do business. They don’t even answer their phone. We have a Grimaldi’s in Palm Beach county, Florida and its better. Can’t believe the difference. I think its gone to their heads here in brooklyn. Sadly, they will always get the tourists because they are just so well known. it really is just a chain now like Chicago style Pizzeria Uno.

I have TWC internet and the highest level of internet data. And it works pretty good. Just their cust service is not that great…

@ Shes Crafty: Hear-say will not suffice the victim needs to come forward about the dog bite.

what do people recommend more? sottocasa on atlantic or dellarocco’s on hicks?

  • kc

Try Table 87 on at 87 Atlantic (I think just past Hicks) for pizza – it’s FABULOUS. we tried dellarocco’s and while we loved the staff there, found the flavors of the toppings to be completely lacking.

Sosta is also good, but Table 87 blows all pizza in the neighborhood out of the water!

Wanderer: what’s your issue here? Can you be more specific before I give you some info?

H, Dellarocco’s is fantastic. Have tried a lot of their menu, and never disappointed. Good wine list too. Great atmosphere.

  • Wonderer

Sorry wanderer – I sense you’re fishing for something – so I’m not playing. Adios

Yay! Another one on board to sling the suspicion!

@DoM not a bad idea but a more productive version might be threads on things that could be improved

after the comments about the cashier’s rudeness at Key Foods, it seemed like the staff had an instant attitude adjustment and were more pleasant

other thread topics have seemed to have a positive influence – from the walk signal, various construction and movie impacts and others

this really would be a greater neighborhood resource with fewer interpersonal grievances and more discussion about what we have that’s pretty good, but could be really great if a minor flaw were tweaked, e.g. perhaps overlapping the parking restriction time periods by an hour so drivers don’t have to idle for hours to make the cut-off, addressing construction issues, noise, etc.

If you want positive change, you have to be positive in communicating it… no one wants to appease a grumpy malcontent
