Open Thread: Wednesday, July 11, 2012

Last Wednesday was the 4th of July, but let the festivities continue on this Open Thread Wednesday. Fire away!

FYI: Our bear friend pictured here lives in Palmetto Playground, located in the southwest tip of Brooklyn Heights, at State Street & Columbia Place, with the BQE behind it. According to NYC Parks, Palmetto Playground’s nomenclature was inspired by the names of its surrounding streets: Atlantic, Columbia & State. Columbia is the capitol of South Carolina, an Atlantic state, and the state tree is the Cabbage Palmetto, hence, Palmetto Playground. The park offers basketball courts, a kid’s playground and a small off-leash dog park. And, by golly, a working water fountain. (Photo: Chuck Taylor)

PromGal, you are stereotyping me without any basis. Much of my family was here pre-1700 and eventually settled in the Midwest. Many of those people were and are, shockingly, Republicans! DAR and FFV are not just monograms on towels to me, either. But I have no truck, if that is the correct phrasing, with snobbery. We are all of equal value regardless of our date of appearance on the American shore.

Nonetheless, I am repulsed by the thought of a park in Brooklyn NYC being named after a state that still flies the flag of the Confederacy, and of slavery. That is my opinion, and you are entitled to your opinion as well.

P.S., this very afternoon I am heading north to see my some of my Republican relatives and plan to swim in their pool! La di dah!

    Oh PromGal get over yourself.

Did I miss the thread where a discussion of he closing of Eammon’s was held? I was certain there would be some talk.

And of course now the speculation (and dreams and hopes) of what it (and the Hallmark store – also apparently gone) will come in its place.
