Open Thread Wednesday, 6-6-2012

Happy Birthday, Paul Giamatti! Our Henry Street neighbor was born June 6, 1967, and turns 45 today. The actor’s first prominent role was 1997’s film adaptation of Howard Stern’s “Private Parts,” as Kenny “Pig Vomit” Rushton, Stern’s antagonistic PD at WNBC. Since, he has gained acclaim in “American Splendor,” “Sideways,” “Cinderella Man” and mini-series “John Adams,” the latter for which he won an Emmy and Golden Globe. Giamatti won a second Golden Globe for “Barney’s Version.”

So here’s an idea. On this Open Thread Wednesday for June 6, 2012, instead of spewing personal “pig vomit” attacks at one another, let’s have a constructive conversation on the BHB. What’s on your mind?

FYI – The Custom House is named for the famous Custom House in Dublin that was bombed by the IRA in 1921. I thought it was the start of the Irish rebellion, but that siege took place at the Post Office, also in Dublin in the same year.

@eg, thank you for posting that! I thought I was the only one who knew that.
Also, Eamonn Doran’s was a bar/venue in Dublin before it was a bar in Brooklyn.

Where are the big Cats with the big Bats? Surely the rich folk on Columbia Heights can call the professional Rat-Bashers. Not everyone is scared of the crawling critters. Whapp! There goes another one homer.

RATS – There are three problems contributing to this situation on Columbia Hts. 1. There is a space between the two buildings 175 and 177 Columbia Hts that I never noticed before. The rats come across 173 and 175 and live in the space that space provides. 2. There is also sunken drain in the courtyard of 173 Columbia Hts. 3. The abandoned house across the street. Poison or traps will have to be placed in the space between the two buildings. I have also notified 311 about the problem. Let’s hope it is solved soon. PS There was a dead one in the courtyard of 185 which was picked up by a glove covered hand, placed in a red bag and given to the parks department guy in front of the Pierrepont Playground.

Wasn’t someone complaining about the dog leavings on Columbia Heights? A friend points out that this could worsen the rat problem.

A modest proposal: rat kebab anyone? Bueller?

Anyone know when Custom House is due to open?

  • lois

I heard Custom House was to open June 17th, the day after Eamonn’s closes.

    ^ Thanks.
