Child’s Play NY ‘Shakespeare Players’ Stage Pint-Size ‘Hamlet’ 4/29

It’s just possible that the next Laurence Olivier, Richard Burton or Kenneth Branagh is right here in Brooklyn Heights… and all of 10 years old. The local Child’s Play NY is featuring its Shakespeare Players troupe in a performance of “Hamlet” Sunday, April 29 at 5 p.m. & 7 p.m. at St. Francis College Theater at 180 Remsen Street.

Directed by Jocelyn Greene, the production’s cast of 14 comprises kids aged 7-10 years old, who will stage a 30-minute cutting of “Hamlet.” The group has been rehearsing since January, with classically trained professional actors boasting credits from the Public Theater/NY Shakespeare Festival, Shakespeare Theater of D.C. and Broadway, assisting the pint-size players with their physical, vocal and emotional transformations. See video footage of the process, including interviews with kids and staff, here.

    The fact that these kids have this kind of opportunity is incredible! And they all seem so deserving of it. I’m going to take my eldest this weekend and check it out.

    Am I the only one who thinks that a play that incorporates the themes of treachery, revenge, incest, and moral corruption might be a bit inappropriate for 10 year olds?

    @nabeguy
    she is pretty selective on what they do – and this helps foster a love of poetry and theater – I think it is terrific!

    My child is in this program and I can tell you it has stimulated her more than any other enrichment program she has ever taken. She’s absolutely turned on to Shakespeare, and having a ball!
