    Thanks for the 311 suggestions, I’ve made the call. Didn’t think I could do it while traveling, but 212-NEW YORK is the same thing (clever!).

    They say they’ll check it out within 10 days. Anyone else who parks on Cranberry, perhaps you can call it in as well, give a little push?

    Thanks!

    Mike

    Old New York slang words and expressions….does anyone recall any? Johnny Pump….

  • Mickey

    Yes, Demonter. The Johnny Pump is the hydrant next to the gutter!

  • Mickey

    Also, when I went to school in Denver in the early 80s my classmates knew I was from back east when I referred to “dungarees” and “sneakers”!

  • Jeffrey Smith

    Well, what do I now see? DOZENS of posters for that most UNCatholic play “Romeo & Juliet” ILLEGALLY posted on like 30 or more lampposts all Over the Heights…..

    Gee, I wonder if I or my associates put up signs Promoting something like:
    http://www.americanfreepress.net or say,

    http://www.mindszenty.org

    Or…I could go on…I wonder what the reaction would be……

  • Mickey

    Jeffrey: there’s only one way to find out for sure.

  • Willow St. neighbor

    I just went past Fortune House. The doors were open but there is a new sign posted that says “Closed for Renovations”.

    Spalding pink rubber balls are “Spaldeens” in Brooklyn.

    Fudgecicles = Fudgeicles

    Long Island = Nassau and Suffolk counties ONLY

    New York=Manhattan (NY County)

    Drawer= Draw

    In summer we go to The Beach- not the shore.

  • John Wentling

    And it’s soda, not “pop”.

    Sorry TK, my store won’t work, but I’ll bet Modells has them – or can get them.

  • Demonter

    Garbage can= trash can…
    Heros =subs
    Frozen custard=soft ice cream

    @John: “my store won’t work”?

  • Publius

    @german: If you’re looking for Zucht und Ordnung, you’re living in the wrong place.

  • Eddyenergizer

    @ German, if you don’t want people stereotyping Germans you shouldn’t call for Zucht und Ordnung.

  • nabeguy

    T.K. he lives in Arizona, so I think that’s what John meant.
    Demonter, you left out the classic: Manhattan = “da city”
    As or me, I left Brooklyn…by God.

  • Demonter

    Nabeguy, how about this old one: “The Bronx? I never go there.”

  • Demonter

    Sissy Mary, Afraidy Cat, Scaredy Cat= Chicken

    “Get on the Cyclone with the other kids Afraidy Cat”.
    “What are you a Sissy Mary?”

  • nabeguy

    demonter, we could do this for days. When I was about 12, I came up with an idea for a book that set out the rules for all the wonderful ways we distracted ourselves during the summer months. I even came up with a title for it…A Guide to Gutter Kids Games.

    Johnny on the Pony, Kick the Can, Ringalevio (or Cocolevio as an alternative name),stoop ball, punch ball (with a Pennsy Pinkie, cause Spaldeen’s were too hard), box ball, Skelly (or Skittles as it was sometimes known).

    How many do you remember? Maybe we can collaborate and get that book published, if only for us nostalgic old-timers who realize what todays bubble children are missing.

  • Eddyenergizer

    Also, stick ball (played with a piece of broomstick) buck buck, doge ball…. oh and pitching pennies, can’t forget that.

    Pennsy Pinkie, I remember them being called “Super Pinkies”

  • bornhere

    Does anyone (other than Since47) remember the game called “Russia,” which involved throwing a Spaldeen against a wall and doing certain movements, which became increasingly complex, before the ball returned? My sister and I — and one of the Gillespie kids, who were the offspring of the super at 8 Clark — used to play it against the more northern portions of the wall of the Towers on Willow Street (the blocks of the wall closer to Clark were too low). On summer early evenings, it was great to play while watching people enter the hotel for ballroom events.
    And remember when Good Humor was sold with a simple “slip-on” waxed paper cover, instead of the hermetically sealed device? And the go-with napkins that had a cut for the stick to slip through?

  • nabeguy

    We had a similar game bornhere…war, as in “I declare war on…”
    in which the declared country had to catch the ball off the wall. A great game and a great geography lesson too, especially if there were 10 kids playing.

  • nabeguy

    Eddy, since you mention pitching pennies, can you help me remember the name of the game where you had to hit a penny centered between two sidewalk squares?Was it Acey-Deuacy or was that a card game? Speaking of which, how many idle hours did you spend playing Hearts?Our generation of kids may have been bored, but dammit if we weren’t inventive!

  • Eddyenergizer

    Nabe, I remember that game. You had to try to make the coin flip over… I don’t remember what it was called though? Acey Ducey is a card game.

  • T.K. Small

    There was a Good Humor truck which frequently parked near the Pierrepont Street playground in the early 70s. I’m sure that people from that era remember this guy. For my sixth birthday, my mother hired the Good Humor guy and his truck for the afternoon. Half of the turnaround on Grace Court was closed and we had a party.

  • mlo

    skellsies, asses up, ring a leavio, kick the can, capture the flag
    , ring n run

  • Remsen

    Went to Pier 6’s Bark Dogs beer/wine bar for another visit. For such a great location, I would have thought the place would be much more crowded. Obviously they are doing something wrong. No advertising and no decorations/plants, etc may be the reason? Don’t know

  • Eddyenergizer

    mlo, I think “ring n run” was more of a mischievous activity than a game… although, I must admit to “playing” it, back in the day… LOL

  • HeightsHunter

    oooo penthouse alert y’all. Hicks and Jorelemon. I didnt know they could build on top of these old Brownstones.
