Tonight’s Window Shaking Explosions and Fireworks Courtesy Of..

Perfect end to a great night: fireworks! on Twitpic Those fireworks that just gave you a near heart attack, scared your dog or woke up your child are courtesy of Dalzell Productions according to Newyorkology:

Tonight, a 10-minute fireworks show is scheduled for the East River at 9 p.m. The Coast Guard has issued a permit to Dalzell Productions (but there is no further public information about why they’re sponsoring the show.) The fireworks barge will be south of the Brooklyn Bridge, near Manhattan’s Pier 16.

I may not see the cats until tomorrow.

    My cat is hiding too!

The barge was down by the heliport.

I wish we we knew when these impromptu firework shows are going to happen so we could, you know — enjoy them

  • AEB

Seriously pissed by this one, which seemed to be taking place inside my head.

One of my two cats dove under the bed covers, couldn’t be dislodged for hours….

Does anyone know a phone number at the Coast Guard to find out about the where and when of fireworks? So we can give pets Valium and get out and enjoy them…(fireworks, not pets)…

I was in bed asleep and all of a sudden I heard a huge explosion thinking it was thunder..I thought the world was coming to an end or the downtown area was under attack. I would be nice if people were notified that they were having fireworks in downtown area so we would not think that we are under attack by the terrorists.

  • Gail

I am always amazed by the large number of people who materialize on the Promenade within minutes of unannounced fireworks commencing. Where do they come from??

  • Alanna

Yes, I’d love to get a schedule as to when these fireworks are taking place. I would have loved to see them but I was just out fo the shower and not running down the street in a towel to catch ’em!

    @ SecretLady:

Sorry to hear you were frightened by the boomers. Lots of scared pets too.

Image how innocent men, women, children, & pets in Iraq & Afghanistan feel when the real things are landing on them due to our illegal wars of conquest?

  • Peter

How do fireworks bring out all the bleeding heart liberals ?
give me a break please !

  • TMS
  • AEB

Uh, Peter, what makes you think that a particular political affiliation accounts for the wish not to see one’s pets frightened?

Allowing yourself to experience your own vulnerabilities might make you less likely to criticize others.

  • AEB

    That should have been “others’…..

  • brooklynbee

Thanks! Now I know who to complain to. I called 311 last night and they simply denied there were any fireworks, they said no permits were on file for any fireworks that evening.

you have issues. maybe NYC isnt the place for you to live! i too was startled by the noise, but then i looked out the window and realized that it was fireworks – not the world coming to an end and not a terror threat on downtown brooklyn. i think the majority of brooklyn heights people are crazy and paranoid. i cant wait to move out of this neighborhood.

I once enquired about the unexpected fireworks and I was told that permission was gotten from the Fire Dept. Try calling our city counselor – Mr. Leven. His office should be able to help you find out.

  • bornhere

I’ve lived here since my own Day 1, and fireworks come with the territory. They are loud, of course, but what is there to complain about? Are some of you wanting Twitter alerts or e-mail updates? And to think that the sounds signal a terrorist attack or something equally horrific is really not clear thinking. Some of us are really over the top about complaining about everything and should maybe take a moment (and feel free to remind me of this bit of pontificating the next time I whine about Henry Street trucks).

  • brooklynheightser

    @bornhere — my sentiments exactly.

  • AEB

I don’t think secretlady thought–literally thought–the world was coming to an end or that BH was under attack.

Descriptive license to indicate that the sudden booming was in it’s way shocking, especially when one was awakened to it.

Can we not allow others their moments of confusion–even fear–without suggesting that they’re crazy, “have issues,” or really shouldn’t feel what they feel because somewhere in the world there are realer dangers?

    Jeeze!

  • nabeguy

Well, got to say, it probably wasn’t the brightest idea to have fireworks on the longest day of the year. On the other hand, if you’re in bed asleep by 9 PM, maybe some fireworks in your life wouldn’t be such a bad thing.
