If anybody is interested in personal radiation detection systems
(they used to be called Geiger counters) they are small accurate
and very affordable, You can also ove up to a real scintella meter which truely measures background radiation levels. Some of the
Japanese products have reached the US mainland as of two days ago.

I also can refer anyone to reliable honest suppliers of Potassum
    Iodine tabs.

Concord Village resident here–did anyone else hear/get woken up Tuesday morning at about 5am by that loud boom? Much, much bigger/louder than a car backfire, sounded like it was on/near Jay Street, possibly near Manhattan Bridge or Tillary Street. Woke up the family, set off car alarms, etc. Anyone know what it was?

Has anyone noticed the homeless lady in Bourough hall.. she ususally is wearing a ton of blankets and smells rancid. My sister said she used to eat at heights cafe every sunday and I guess is now homeless.. (I almost find it hard to believe that this could be the same person). I saw her finally venture out from the subway the other day and was standing on the corner by ANDYS.. I want to be able to help her or reach out to a homeless out reach program about her.. she has been covered in waste the last few times i’ve seen her and seems in need of some serious mental and hygenic help. Does anyone know who I could contact? Or does anyone know of the person I am talking about?

  • mlo

Karl where are you eating this week? Recommendations?

  • Ari

Anyone know what happened to all of the public garbage cans on Joralemon & Hicks ?

Additionally, am I crazy or am I seeing A LOT of broken glass in many tree well throughout the neighborhood? Specifically on Remsen Street between Clinton and the promenade….but generally all over the area honestly.

I was walking my dog and actually saw a group of youths non-challantly slam a snapple bottle right in the middle of a sidewalk….what is going on??

  • GHB

Anyone know when the entrance to the Promenade by Clark Street will be fixed? June will be a year! I’ve tried calling 311 to no avail.

Ari, I’ve noticed that garbage cans have been disappearing from all over the North Heights. Anybody know what’s going on? Again, 311 has been useless.

Lastly, does anyone know what that extremely loud helicopter was doing last night around 11:00? It was flying pretty low over the neighborhood and it was REALLY loud.

  • Lauren

GHB- I heard that hellicoptor too ! I assume it was a police coptor looking for someone?

Go to NYS Senate District 25 (Senator Sqadron) to see how wealthy your neighbors are: http://www.scribd.com/doc/51377225/Senate-District-Income-Distribution.

The low end of the income spectrum, which skews the overall numbers, are likely from the many students in the neighborhood.

Lauren, I appreciate your post and your concern for this homeless woman’s well-being. While I don’t know the exact address, I know there is a homeless shelter on Remsen Street (just off Henry Street, near the synagogue) that may be able to help. My wife and I have cooked for the homeless a few times there, I will see if I can get the exact location for you. Sincerely, best of luck!

  • Lauren

Thanks Peter, I appreciate it. I really feel horrible for ALL the homeless, But I see this woman on a constant basis and my heart always goes out to her.

  • David on Middagh

That helicopter was flying very low indeed. Perhaps circling the Brooklyn Bridge?

  • Bornhere

Lauren- If you call 311 and explain your concern, they will give you the phone number of an outreach group that responds almost immediately. Staff of the group seem to be caring and concerned, and the one time I spoke with them about a homeless person in the Heights, they arrived within 30 minutes to offer comfort, aid, etc.

Peter may be right, but I don’t know of an actual shelter on Remsen or anywhere in the Heights.

  • Lauren

    Okay thanks so much

  • Tony

The chimes are down! The chimes are down!

  • epc

The helicopter was circling the Brooklyn Bridge, working with NYPD patrol boats, searching the infrastructure of the bridge (I’m assuming it was for a reported jumper but couldn’t tell from where I was standing in the park).

  • Peter

Hi again Lauren, the homeless shelter is at 131 Remsen Street: http://tinyurl.com/4tl2rkl

Can anyone recommend a good acupuncturist in the neighborhoood?

    Thanks!

  • Linda

    GHB,
In the past I have e-mailed Judy Stanton at the BHA and she always responded. She might have information regarding the Clark Street entrance to the Promenade.

    mlo,

I will be posting an excellent inexpensive dining spot in Cobble Hill. Just opened in January. An unbelievable stew cost me $4 and I was full after eating it. Incredible. It should be completed tomorrow. It will be posted on the Cobble Hill Blog.

  • GHB

    Linda, thanks… I’ll give that a shot.

I’ve noticed the homeless woman has been there quite a bit lately. The Borough Hall station in general is really an awful and depressing place that I try and get through as quickly as possible. I feel bad for anyone that see it as a best available option for shelter.

On a brighter note, I do enjoy the Spanish guitarist that performs there occasionally. He’s very good.

Did anyone see fixed wing peersonal aircraft dive UNDER the Bklyn Bridge. I’ve seen this 2 times.

    EXTREME THUNDER

  • Heightster

Hi Lauren – The shelter on Remsen is run through the Brooklyn Heights Synagogue. Call them for more info 718-522-2070. I believe the woman needs to be registered through a centralized agency. They don’t take walk-ins. The women arrive every evening by bus at around 8:00 pm and are picked up in the morning at about 6:30 or 7:00.

  • GHB

A Brooklyn Heights Synagogue mention should wake up Topham Beauclerk and Tony…

Ha, GHB, be careful! This week’s thread has been pretty civilized so far.
