Bicyclist Killed on BQE Ramp

A bicyclist was killed this morning on the Atlantic Avenue ramp of the BQE, according to BHB’s Weegee. Channel 7 adds a report that makes it sound like the rider was on the expressway itself:

WABC-TV: Police say the victim was hit in the westbound lanes, near Atlantic Avenue, just before 4:30 a.m. Thursday.

The first vehicle to hit him left the scene. A second vehicle then struck the bicyclist, and that vehicle stopped.

The victim was rushed to Long Island College Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Money breeds contempt. Contempt breeds hatred. I wouldn’t admit to living in BH either.

  • Mickey

Buddy … since no one answered your question: in this case, South is West as I-278 (the BQE) ultimately moves West into Staten Island then New Jersey.

  • Buddy Holly

    Thanks, Mickey.

This thread is devolving into a separate interesting topic, which I can’t recall seeing on BHB before:

Is the general residential vibe of Brooklyn Heights uptight, bland, boring, and self absorbed?

  • T.K. Small

Yes, we are. That is why I am having a very carefully measured portion of plain oatmeal for dinner so I can live forever.

  • william

Have to agree with T.K. and his assessment. Yes it is.

BH has always has been a snob haven. But the ratio of A-holes to regular people is rising rapidly, especially with the new residents at 360 Furman (aka 1 Brooklyn Bridge Park) – the most obnoxious, self-important, entitled people on the planet. I just want to puke.

The hood is lost. Especially if Regina imports more of them for the planned new Condos. And where are those A-holes going to send their bratty kids with no new schools being built?

Brooklyn Heights is doomed. Sell if you can, and move somewhere else.

  • nabeguy

I wouldn’t say doomed..but definitely being groomed. BH has been subject to ups and downs throughout its history. It’s doubtful that you’ll ever hear any more stories like mine, in which a house bought for $9000 back in ’53 is now selling for over $3 million, but it will always be a neighborhood that goes through periods of long stability punctuated by sudden upheavals based on the overall economy. NYC is an organism that’s always growing or shrinking in different directions…the Heights (and environs), is just one of the body parts to see rapid expansion.

@william, I’m not sure the name-calling is necessary, but your point is valid in terms of more housing being built without infrastructure, i.e., schools. This is happening all over NYC and is not the fault of the parents, but the mayor, the DOE, etc. Their lack of foresight in planning is stunning–and not in a good way.

  • GHB

William, if you hate it so much here, why don’t you get the F out?

  • BH–loud & proud: we’re here, we’re near, get used to it

@William–have you met the Dumbo people? They’re more obnoxious than Brooklyn Heights people—nouveau riche and acting like it, which is what BH is starting to become based on the high density with increased real estate and new buildings (mixed in with the Dumbo effect). South of the border (i.e. on the other side of Atlantic Ave.) it is still pleasant and friendly, with a much lower population density. BH acts as a good buffer until the killer B[H’s] strike.

  • Ben

This tragedy – another bike rider dead. Yes I feel for the guy who killed him that poor guy is now up to his neck in legal trouble, etc.

ALL of these bike advocates, i.e. Transportation Alternatives MUST see that riding a bike on the BQE is dangerous if not just plain dumb?

Speaking of dumb how come there is NO comment here from Transportation Alterantives?

Bikes and trucks, cars are NOT a good mix.

  • Alanna

Obviously none of those commenting negatively have ever lived in “wealthier” areas of California. You want to talk about pompous a-holes? try residing in Laguna Beach, CA for 4 years. Beautiful, but wow are people self-possessed.

I love BH…there are a-holes everywhere, ignore ’em or move to the ‘burbs.

and ditto on the sentiment about the inhabitants of DUMBO.

  • skunky

@JeffP isn’t suicide sorta like the definition of tragic?

  • Arch Stanton

Whats really tragic is some people here are more concerned about some chopper noise than someone getting killed.

  • william

GHB, you seem to be part of the problem with BH’s perceived image. Not the solution. Have a nice day.
