Saw the flick while I was in Cali. Bridge’s was mumbling, my girlfriend and I had a hard time understanding his dialogue.

Andrew, given the fact that you’re cognizant of the alarm that an unidentified suitcase left anonymously on someone’s front door might cause, I am stunned at the level of stupidity you displayed in leaving it there. Just so you know, the first ones to discover your little gift were my daughter and her nanny, who were completely freaked out by it. Just be glad I wasn’t around for this stunt or you’d be picking Belgian block out of your skull.

  • nabeguy

not nabeguy, I’m not sure where you’re coming from, but I have the wisdom to know how to spell the word.

  • Andrew Porter

Sorry, Nabeguy. My humble apologies. I was put up to it by another Middagh Street resident. I’d originally planned to bring it to the Housing Works Thrift store on Montague.

Anyone know what is opening in the old Nine West space on Mantague? Seems to be a lot of action lately and I peeked in and saw shelving along the back wall that made me think a clothing store.
Also I noticed that the Iris Nail Salon sign is down…does that mean it’s been scrapped?

Accepted Andrew. I don’t mean to sound like the proverbial old man screaming “get off of my lawn!!”. But, in this case, please, get off of my lawn.

Anyone know of an internet only company in the hood that might be able to install Internet? – don’t need phone or cable, so would like options if they still exist besides timewarner and verizon…and AOL won’t cut it!

  • Things that make you go hmmm….

I understand that Senator Squadron, who ran as a reformer, was one of those who nominated John Sampson as head of the NYS Senate Democratic Conference. Sampson is under attack for various issues, including allegations of giving bidding information to AEG insiders while not releasing the info to others. A group of 4 Democratic Senators broke off from the Democratic conference and alleged wrongdoing by Sampson and demanded that various ethics reforms be instituted. See, for example, http://www.capitaltonight.com/2011/01/the-new-amigos/. Where was Senator Squadron? Why is he supporting the non-reform Democrats? Doesn’t he favor stringent ethics (he says he does by his government paid multi-color mailing that I just received)?

@bc – You are so right about the helicopter noise. I’m in the North Heights and that downtown heliport is driving me insane. From around 9 am until about 6 pm, 7 days a week, non-stop landings/takeoffs. The plan “they” came up with does not address the noise of the very existence of that heliport, only the flight paths, which didn’t seem to be addressed at all for the residents of Red Hook. I was in your neighborhood a few weeks ago and was wondering how people were dealing with the problem. We all need to get our voices together and demand an end to tourist helicopters operating from downtown. The upper west side managed to do it, but sadly, the city sent those very same helicopters to our neighborhoods. I moved to the Heights for the peace & quiet, and now it’s gone. Calling 311 is useless. I’m ready to hit the streets with petitions to sign. Wanna join me?

Jim- Vzon Fios offers internet only service, don’t have to buy a whole bundle. Industry term is “naked DSL.”

Depending on where you live in the heights you might be able to get Speakeasy ADSL. It is not as theoretically fast as TWC cable modem service but I find it to be more consistent (I’ve also seen downloads go much faster on the 6Mbs ADSL than the allegedly 15Mbs Time Warner connection). You may or may not get hit with a line charge depending entirely upon the whims of Verizon (I paid a line charge when I had Speakeasy over an existing phone line on Hicks St 2003-2007, but not at present in DUMBO even though it’s naked DSL).

Thanks hick-up and epc for the info! – Jim

  • David on Middagh

Big flakes are coming down, and our friend the redtail hawk is perched in the oak tree outside 33/35 Middagh St., four stories up.

The helicopter situation is horrendous. The harbor has become a defacto airport for 4-8 minute tourist tours of the harbor. It’s an outrage. We have a noise ordinance and the helicopters are breaking the law. Let’s get the Times and the Daily News on this. How much money could these tourist trips possibly be making for the city? Not much. There is more to this. They are being protected.
