Clinton Street’s Joe Dec Dies, Neighbors Searching for Family Members

This news just in from BHB reader Jim Murray:

Longtime Heights neighbor and friend Joe Dec passed away on Wednesday, December 1, while walking to his home at 30 Clinton Street. Joe could often be seen sitting outside his apartment building chatting with neighbors who walked by. He was a fixture in the neigborhood. Those who might have noticed Joe years ago will remember seeing him with his black Pekingese “Muffin”, who accompanied him everywhere.
Notice of services/ memorial pending.

Murray and other neighbors are looking for members of Mr. Dec’s family saying “if no relatives come forward that he may end up in Potters Field. Joe was a veteran. He should have a proper burial in a military cemetery.”

Contact us – webmaster at brooklynheightsblog dot com – if you can help Mr. Dec’s friends locate his family.

Has anyone contacted the VA? They may be able to provide assistance tracking down relatives.

as a social worker working with the elderly, i’m pretty certain that if you contact Calverton VA Cemetery, you’ll be able to arrange a burial for him. also, there are other organizations that might contribute to a burial/cremation. i’ll contact you offline to provide my phone/email

Contact the Kings County Public Administrator at (718) 643-3032 or just go down to 360 Adams Street, Rm 144. They are the NYC agency that handles this type of situation. They work very hard looking for family, or at the least finding the graves of deceased family members so that the individual does not get buried at Potter’s Field.

Does anyone have a photo of him? I remember his Peke, but only remember him very vaguely. Sad, though.
