The giant menorah at Brooklyn Borough Hall was lit tonight by NYS Senator Daniel Squadron and Rabbi Aaron Raskin. Mayor Bloomberg lit its rival for Brooklyn’s tallest, the menorah at Grand Army Plaza last night:
NY1: Standing 32 feet high, Mayor Michael Bloomberg did the honors as he was lifted above Brooklyn’s Grand Army Plaza to light the first flame.
The holiday began at sundown and will continue for the next eight nights.
The mayor used the event to promote unity.
“It’s for everybody in New York,” Bloomberg said. “Regardless of your religion, and regardless of where you come from, we’re all in this life together. So, Happy Hanukkah to everyone, whether you’re Jewish or not.”
