Anna Montemarano, Cranberry’s “Mom”, Dies at 93

All of us at BHB were saddened by the news (brought to our attention by statestreeter) that Anna Montemarano, the Matriarch of Cranberry's, died on March 14 at the age of 93.  We always felt that each bagel and baked good purchased at the store had just a little more love in it when we'd see Anna on duty. Our condolences go out to Jim and everyone at Cranberry's.

Brooklyn Eagle: “She worked a full day on March 13, 2008, and passed into God’s hands the following day,” recalled her son. Said Jim, “she went out her way: working.” Twice a survivor of cancer, she will be missed greatly not only by family and friends, but also by all the happy customers at Cranberry’s who enjoyed her treats.

Memorial services will be held at Assumption Church at 73 Cranberry St. (right around the corner from the shop) on April 19 at 11:45 a.m.

There are definitely a lot of tastebuds in mourning at her loss. Her delicacies will surely be missed, as will she.

Yeah. And for all of the comments on here about “national chains” mucking up the neighborhood, here’s a really good local business that truly deserves your support. If you’ve tried the place and don’t like it, that’s ohe thing. But if you’ve walked by to or from the A train, stop off sometime and get your coffee to go. The people who work there are nice and the food is good.

You could always count on Anna to have fresh baked goods ready to start the day off right with excellent coffee. Truly an institution. I’ve been in the neighborhood for 20 plus years and was spoiled rotten by her excellent baking abilities. My best goes to Jim who we all respect greatly.
