I think Ben wants a pool… unfortunately for him, nobody else thinks of an aquatics center when they think of a park.

ABC: How to you get the $90/month @ EAC?

North Heights Resident: I can tell u quite the opposite in the matter of customer service. I work for a large company on LI who has a deal with them on their LI locations. They refuse to give me a similar pricing as on LI which is somewhat in the low $80s/month. I would even be happy if we could meet in the middle, but to no avail. Maybe I just need to quit EAC in the first place as I havent gone in months anyway. When they talked about converting me to a yearly membership vs a monthly membership the price difference was less than $10/month.

  • ABC

I think it’s pretty shady down there. Not too hot. Think it’s going to used at the PS8 playground for a couple of years, and THEN maybe steps to BBP. That’s what I heard some time ago.

Empty is good. Empty means you can play tag or ride your scooter or bring a ball and make up your own game. I prefer empty.

EAC has sales periodically. If you pay for a 8 or 9 month term ahead of time, you can get a discounted rate. That’s what I did.

I am pretty sure they are putting a skate park in squibb park.

    hows NYSC on the Remsen/court?

  • nabeguy

Given all the carping that the other BPP playgrounds have generated, you’re probably right ABC…less is more.

  • AEB

x, please scroll up and see my comments about NYSP on Remsen, above.

  • Karl Junkersfeld

Someone took down my2cents signs on Henry and needless to say, cars are parked illegally. More money for the city and less for hard working Americans.

  • jorale-man

As a previous commenter noted, NYSC has friendly staff and equipment that’s in reasonably good shape. And it’s never crowded in the morning. On the flip side, their air conditioning has been busted during the entire heat wave and it’s barely cooler inside from out. I’ve had that problem at other NYSC locations in the city; they seem to struggle at keeping their gyms cool in the summer.

There are also a few odd characters there in the morning, though that’s not the gym’s fault.

  • Clarky

I am a member of EAC and I have to say, I have never had a problem with the locker rooms or anybody who works there. Everyone I deal with at the front desk is nice. The locker room (at least I can speak for the women’s) is always very clean. I’ve never heard of any theft issues there (unlike many other gyms I see on the police blotter frequently). Sure, the equipment could be a bit better, the tvs definitely could be better, but it’s really not as bad as some of the other commenters have been indicating. If I had lots more money, would I check out the Equinox? Maybe.

  • WillowtownCop

I am a member of the public gym in Red Hook park. I wouldn’t use the shower there, but the machines are nice, there are a lot of them, there are people there to help you with them, there is a huge outdoor pool, and the membership is $75 … a year!

Could not agree more with justaneighbor. The Barkeep at Jack The Horse is a pro of the first order and clipboard mafia on Montague has got to go. And why are they always advocating for some ultra left wing cause? I’m hardly a conservative, or even a republican really, but it would be really funny to see folks canvassing for some cause like Keep Guantanomo Open or some other seemingly rightist point of view. Not that I’d agree with them, but I might actually stop to chat them up just to let them know I admire their courage.

  • my2cents

Karl, I noticed that the signs were down yesterday as well. I have more of them at home and will re-post them. I was wondering if the wind and rain took them or if they were deliberately removed…

  • nabeguy

my2, from what I observed, your signs came down in a piecemeal fashion, so weather may have been the culprit. Although there may have been some idiots out there who thought that, by ripping down the signs, they were actually drawing attention away from the problem. Wasn’t it tb who posted that they actually got into an altercation with someone after warning them of the potential consequences for parking along that strip?

Has anyone noticed that whenever there is a holiday, EAC uses the opportunity to shave off the working hours of the club days before and AFTER the holiday? It’s sometimes absurd.

Also, to Justaneighbor: the “clipboard mafia” you wrote of are called “Chuggers” in London. Charity + muggers = chuggers.

  • justaneighbor

“Chuggers” – love it! As far as I’m concerned, anyone who’s harrassing me while I’m on my way IN to get coffee should be smacked upside the head with their clipboard.

The best was when I was coming out of 9 West with a shopping bag (sniff, tear) one day and one of them blocked my path trying to get me to take a survey. I told him I didn’t have time, and for the record, was perfectly nice about it. He actually snapped at me, saying “so you’ve got time to buy shoes but you don’t have time to save the earth?”

    Bitch.

Anyway Flavio, lots of luck seeing that happen around here. Although, it would be pretty funny to see the Guantanomo guys on one side of Montague and the Pro-Life/Save The Earth gang on the other. Just for um, giggles.

  • x

Those Chuggers would fare better in Williamsburg.

  • my2cents

The Chugger phenomenon is a perplexing one. I heard a story on NPR where a researcher studied them and found that this tactic was insanely inefficient at fund raising. And not only that, but the young idealistic people who signed up to do it were so scarred by it that they were less likely to be politically active in the future than their peers. Finally, she foudn that onl;y liberal groups use this tactic. She could not find an example of a conservative group that uses canvassers. Which I found sort of surprising.

But the right has Bristol and Levi…..

I just want to recognize the good dental care that Dr. Janice Lau provided to my son and daughter. I brought my kids to her office earlier in the week after seeing positive reviews online. And her detailed exam and gentle treatment and friendly approach with my kids made them feel comfortable being at her office. An added bonus is that she is also a resident in the neighborhood, so it is nice to see people who live and serve in their community. Dr. Janice Lau’s dental care is a nice new welcomed addition to the neighborhood. Hope this brooklyn heights dentist can continue to provide excellent dental care to the kids in the Brooklyn Heights community.

  • OnMyPhone

Anybody else having issues with cable/internet?

  • brian

@OnMyPhone my Internet has been down for about 6 hours and the cable is chugging pretty bad. You in Northern Heights? Called Time Warner and there was an automated message about the service in “my area”. Hoping to wake up and have it working.

  • OnMyPhone

    @Brian,

Yes, I’m on Cranberry. Called TW and got the same thing you did. Laaaaame!

  • WillowtownCop

I always tell the save the children chuggers that I don’t like children. They get really flustered and they don’t know what to say.

  • T.K. Small

The chuggers seem to be afraid of my wheelchair and never even make eye contact with me.

@ Brooklyn: I went to Ronald Malen for a couple of years because he took my insurance. He was a nice guy, but almost always late (even for the first appointment of the day), and screwed up one of my teeth so badly – it was a deep filling – that I had to go elsewhere to have it fixed. Needless to say I never went back.

Don’t know anything about the other dentist.

  • zburch

I like my dentist, Dr. Last on Schermerhorn

There was a link to plans posted on this blog about SQUIBB Park a little while ago. The plans I saw said they may put a skate park and table tennis stations in there as well as a planned bridge over furman to the park.

  • Joe

If you can afford it Equinox is great. New equipment, nice friendly staff, very clean lockers and showers.

  • Kim G.

“clipboard mafia”…”chuggers”? I missed that story but I will say that when you have 3 kids in tow people usually leave you alone. I’ve also mastered the fine art of ignoring people so one would have to be pretty impressive to get my attention. I do think it’s kind of sad to see though. Does anyone know if they work on commission?
