Meanwhile, demolition continues of the buildings landward of Pier 1. This view from the Brooklyn Bridge shows the northernmost building almost completely demolished.

This view, from the northern end of the Promenade, shows demolition of the southernmost building, apart from clearing away rubble, to be complete. Once the lower side buildings are gone, demolition of the central, and tallest. building will begin. This will open up views of the Brooklyn Bridge from the Promenade.

Upsetting that they’re going to leave half the pier unfinished. Won’t look very nice.

I was a little surprised that the entire Pier 6 was not finished, yet they opened it up (the bridge/pools portion). However, they have done a good job segmenting that portion off. I imagine they will do the same with Pier 1 and leave the actual pier unfinished while opening the playgrounds. I hope that they eventually connect the two opened sections with a continuation of that road that now goes down to Pier 2 so one can run through the entire length of the park instead of along the highway.

I agree, it is a bit discouraging that so much is left unfinished. If you look at the timeline on the park web site, the rest of the pier is not slated to open until Spring 2013.

In an ideal world, they’d finish that one this year and also get to work on Piers 2 and 3. Those are the ones that are most visible from the promenade, and are most central too. But in this economy, you have to take what you can.
